Still trudging along the learning curve of the camera functions for the Sony Ericsson c902. I've shot exactly 100 pictures, as of today. (May 23, 2010) Of those 100 pics, only 2 or 3 are worth saving.

Today's question:

In the camera, >Settings >Picture Quality >Fine/Normal.

What's the difference?

I've been shooting with "Fine", and as I indicated above, the results have been not acceptable. To me, anyway. The sharpness, is what's lacking. The color is very good, but the overall quality of the pic is just not all that good. Maybe I'm being to critical of the camera. After all, it is basically just a phone. lol. But, I keep looking at the outstanding photos you folks have posted with the c902, and mine are nowhere near the sharpness of yours.

I am not a newcomer to digital cameras, but most definitely a newbie new guy to the camera phone world.

It's higher image quality setting but it's more compressed so it does not always mean it will be better. If only phones could shoot in RAW mode Fine means exactly that the image fits in more detail & will be a higher sized file too but as I said it does not always mean better just like mega pixels. Dedicated digital cameras have the same setting as phones do too. But the c902 is showing it's age now in my opinion & when I had it it was never the best anyway. It has dreadful purple fringing. Fine will increase picture file size but will be more compressed normal well I can't really comment cos to me it makes little difference

Thank you, Bonovox, your reply makes perfect sense. I should have thought about the compression issue.

One of my normal Sony DSC cameras, (H5) has 5 Megapixels, which is plenty, the picture quality, sharpness, is a tad better than the c902. When you get right down to it, it's the sensor size that makes the difference.

I thought that setting the "Fine" mode decreased the compression and thus increased the file size?
High compression - small file size restricts level of detail but allows you to take more pictures
Low compression - greater file size allows for more detail but takes up more memory

The only problem I see with the N8 is that there will be 3 major smartphone OSes dominating or gaining traction in the market - Iphone OS, Android & WebOS (now that HP has bought Palm). I doubt that Symbian or Winmo7 will be able to catch up seeing that the first 3 has spread or will be spreading to other mobile devices (tablets, smartbooks & even TV).

A common mobile OS & apps is going to be pretty attractive proposition for buyers.
