Nokia top model N900 sales below 100,000-Gartner
* Nokia executive says sales well above expectations
* Apple sold well above 10 million iPhones in same period
By Tarmo Virki, European Technology Correspondent
LONDON, May 28 (Reuters) - Nokia sold less than 100,000 top-of-the-range N900 smartphones in its first five months on the market, researcher Gartner said, indicating it has yet to mount a serious challenge to the iPhone and Blackberry.
The chunky computer-like handset -- with slide-out keyboard and a touch screen -- has found support among hard-core technology specialists but failed to attract a wider audience.
A spokesman for Nokia (NOK1V.HE), the world's top cellphone maker, declined to comment on the sales number, saying the company was pleased with sales, but an executive was more bullish.
"Sales have substantially exceeded expectations," Alberto Torres, head of Nokia's solutions business, told the Open Mobile Summit trade conference in London this week.
Nokia has been unable to mount a serious challenge to Apple (AAPL.O) three years after the iPhone's launch. Its last hit smartphone model, the N95, was unveiled in 2006.
The sales of less than 100,000 N900s compares with sales of 8.75 million iPhones in January-March alone.

Wow!
Like I always say, manufacturers will always put a brave face and claim 'the sales have surpassed our expectations...'
I had a feeling this phone wasn't doing well at all and this confirms it.
The question is is this worldwide?

I don't think this N900 was ever meant to be serious competition for the iPhone, it's a niche-model for tech-lovers, too geeky for the general public.

I guess it is - worldwide sales for it's 1st 5 months. May be they were expecting to sell substantially less because its an all new OS.

Then those are terrible sales indeed.
@Marly
I think we need to define what a niche product is these days. Wasn't the N900 priced similarly as the X10 and/or Desire?
The X10 sold a hundred thousand units in less than a month in Japan ONLY at that niche price bracket.
The fact is people are buying Android more and more and Nokia is at a point where it struggles to compete. Honestly, does anyone really think Nokia expected to sell less than a hundred thousand phones and then turn around and proclaim that they are happy with the sales?
If anyone buys into that then they are as gullible as ever.

I also think too many of Nokia's fans are used to Symbian they just were never going to take to this

the article is incorrect.
Engadget had the same, 5 months. But i think Nokia contacted them... it was within the first 5 weeks... NOT months

Its a niche device as it wasnt produced in large amounts like X10 and Desire,its not just about price. Also take into account that its being sold in a select bunch of countries. As said above,its aimed at geeks "techys" ,it even had apps that could potentialy corrupt the phone sitting there in some folder (forgot the name) that were beta softwares, did X10 and Desire come with this? No,they're made for the mass market.
By the way apparently its 100,000 units in 5 WEEKS NOT MONTHS, CHECK UPDATE:

Ah, well that's a different story altogether. Still, I think people are still waiting for a so called iPhone challenger from Nokia, the N8 looks more of a challenger than the N900 to me.

@Tsepz_GP
Hence I mentioned Japan. What I'm getting at is if it was released in certain countries only then the X10 did better
The correct figures are quite acceptable then. Not a bad going.
