On My Satio I have the two options
"When avaialble"
"When required" in Settings-->Connectivity--->Admin. Settings-->Packet Data-->Packet data connection,

Does selecting "When Required" use less battery as your not logging onto the data network ? or does it make any difference ?

No! it doesn't. It's better to leave it when available if you use your phone's internet as it will constantly lose connection. There is no downgrade on battery performance, that is only via 3G to 2G connection.

You don't loose your connection on both things.this options shows/hides the connections arrows when you are not online.

True, but it does not just allow it to show arrows underneath the icon. Otherwise it would clearly say show or hide arrows. This lets you connect without sending packet data so your next connection to the net would be quicker, please don't post false information.

Yes, but does it setup an initial data connection and thus using your battery every time you move around?
or is it just an indication that data is available for use in the cell?
I think I will leave it to "When Required".
