> Mobile phone screens, why the fuss?
Bookmark topic
Hi all
So, been reading comments on the iPhone 4 here and there, and I have come across numerous comments (excitement) about the screen, RD/Screen resolution, etc. Not just the iphone, also in regards to Amoled/Super Amoled, 16mil colours etc etc.
Now, is it just me who fails to see the 'excitement' behind all these different types of screens? I mean, sure, high resolution offers 'better' browsing experience, amoleds offer deeper blacks, 16mil colours (more vivid, apparently) bla bla bla.
But I fail to see why there is so much hype/fuss made over screens on mobile phones? Yeah, ok, so people use them to surf the net, watch videos, play games etc... At the end of the day, they are still mobile phones, and have, what I call, small screens. For me, I dont care if my phone has amoled, RD, 16m or 65k colours etc. Its not my tv or my computer. Im not on it that much to consider it a major factor when purchasing a phone, even if I used it constantly, it still would not matter. Again, for me, simply, its not TV or computer.
So, what gives?

but I think thats the point, they are no longer just mobile phones. Making calls is just one of the many integrated features and I probably use my iphone much more for its entertainment capabilities than I do for its phone capabilities, and with the iphone 4, I expect to be using the video capabilities alot more too, and then there's gaming and then... well you get the point.
There is no reason why small screens shouldn't be as clear and bright as a 60" LCD TV. In fact there is probably more reason for small screens to have this if only to save our eyes from strain.

i knew some one was going to say 'they are more than just mobile phones'

And yes, I do agree.
However, with games and web etc etc, I understand they are both widely used in phones these days, but why shouldnt a normal 65k/16mil screen, minus RD/Amoled, etc, be enough for people? I mean, the way some people go on about screens is as if they worry about them more than their TV/Computer screens quality.
i guess its just the size, ok you may be able to tell the difference, but is it really that important on screens that small?

well I guess it was the obvious reply, but its true.
Games and web are widely popular in phones because we have them with us all the time. I've decided against the iPad for just this reason as I don't think I would carry it around with me enough to get the use, and the rest of the time I have my phone, or my pc.
If the manufacturers are going to put better screens in phones, I am certainly happy for them to do so!

each to their own I guess masseur
As i said earlier, personally, quality in screens that size simply arent of 'major' importance to me. At least no where near tv/pc screen...
would love to hear others opinions on this...

I remember all the fuss about the screen of the X10 having only 64k colours and not once have I heard or read anyone complain - in fact I seriously doubt anyone can tell the difference.
All that matters to me is how it performs. Screens are meant to be looked at, and should be visible in most environments regardless of the technology.
Most people are only interested in how it ultimately performs - not necessarily the technology behind it. What good is an AMoled screen if it fades away under the slightest hint of sunlight?

I love to have a nice high res screen mostly for viewing the web and photos but again most of that is done on my pc anyway. Games on phones I don't bother with you don't need high res screen for music though its good for a camera too. The problems I see with all these screens is so many manufacturer's are not addressing the problem of sunlight viewing. And we know that the higher res brighter screens will drain the battery quicker but with the advancement in technology with LED screens battery life is improved. A high res screen is nice but for me too its not the first feature I look at which is why I have a phone like the Elm. Its other quality features that are better.
