is it really true that the IMEI of each phone is permanent and unique? I'm getting conflicting information on this.

Yes it is true. I once dropped a phone down some stairs and claimed it back on the insurance. They asked for both SIM no and IMEI trace that my SIM card had been in that phone at that time. So yes the IMEI is the phones fingerprint! KS :-)

I do know that you CAN get the IMEI number changed! It IS possible, but it's illegal and you shouldn't do it! But I've read about it several times!

It depends a little of what kind of phone you have, some are easier to spoof than others, fx; motorola and siemens is two of the simplest to change the imei on, Nokia and Ericsson are rather difficult...
This might have changed now... I haven't tried on any phones the 2-3 last years

why should you change it? It's illegal to do it. There is no need to change IMEI number on a phone (if you are using it legally)...
With the right program and and a datacable it can be done on your home computer.

One of my mates has a T68 and he keeps on going on about changing the IMEI number. He has had some problems with it.
The phone works fine on BT Cellent, Vodafone but it don't work on one2one. He likes change the IMEI number will make it work on one2one..
