Having owned cybershot SE phones from day 1, from K800 > k850 > c905, i finally gave up on the shitty build quality and pathetic performance (playing music in the background grounded everything to a halt).
I since went on to buy a 3GS, which took good photos, but with convincing. I now have an iPhone 4 and I can honestly say it is the best cam phone on the market, if not compact camera. This sounds extreme, but let me explain.
I have a DSLR, which is what I use when I want to take good pictures, compacts can't come close. However, 90% of pictures taken on compacts will end up on facebook, which is why iPhone is so good.
Not only does it take very nice photos, without the fuss of manual settings or strange problems I faced with SE phones, it allows you to edit them on your phone down to relatively advance levels. I am not one for doing this on my phone so I have an app called camera + which has an awesome array of photo tools to give pictures life.
Not only this, but once you have created these photos, you can upload them straight to facebook, anywhere. Which is why I think the iPhone wins as a compact since it completes all 3 of the main tasks in one device/app instead of using 3 different things.
The camera performance of the iPhone is vastly improved from the 3GS, however, it is still not inline with that of compacts, however, test have shown that it has better photo quality than 8MP cam phones. Its not as such about the mega pixel count, but how you use them, which is what I think SE have forgotten.
+ the retina display is phenomenal
Here are some photos I took without any editing:
With camera +:

Very good shots but you say that you didn't edit any of the photos. Do you mean editing after downloading from the iPhone instead of in-phone apps? A couple of the shots have clearly been treated to some editing. Like this panorama shot:
And this with a smoke-like frame:
If you use iPhone apps then which ones? I use AutoStitch for stitching panoramic shots.

Flamebait
And good to see colours (like the blue sky) are as exagerated as they were on the 3G S
Now over to the other subjective disagreers

The blue sky looks a bit boosted except in the second shot which looks normal, just like from the 3GS.

the panoramic was not altered, just put through autostitch.
Yer, the brown one was edited in camera + on my iPhone, but i did mention that.
The one with the very blue sky is directly from the camera, I personally think the camera app that apple has as the default saturates some colours.

Is it safe to say then that with the inbuilt apps that it is easier to handle photos than on other phones but that the iP4's cameras is not necessarily the best one on the market as the topic says?

perhaps the photos are best seen/left on the retina display as they don't look any better than any other photographs taken by any other mobile phone with a 5MP camera that I have seen displayed on my PC monitor, I'd even go as far as to say I have seen better.
