Sony Ericsson moves closer to Sony
UK MD: Pair will work closely on development, content, branding and devices
Sony Ericsson and Sony will work more closely on product development, content, branding and interconnected devices, Sony Ericsson UK MD Nathan Vautier told Mobile this week.
He declined to comment on reports that Sony Ericsson is developing a PlayStation smartphone with Sony but said: ‘I can say that our relationship with Sony will continue to get closer and stronger. There is a huge amount of excitement at the possibilities. It is about how we can use each other in the right way.’
He added: ‘One area we are investigating is interconnected devices. There is a huge wealth of content Sony has access to and we are looking at how we can use that across all the portfolio.’
Vautier said Sony Ericsson’s primary focus is to make its smartphones ‘the most entertaining’. He added: ‘To do that we need to use content in the right way, and one thing we have within our family is the wealth of content that Sony has.’
Sony Ericsson is also planning to develop its eStore proposition. Vautier said: ‘We are looking at how we align our eStore – as consumers become more comfortable online we are looking at developing the service – it’s about how we support existing consumers and bring in new customers.’
Sony Ericsson will launch the Xperia X8 in ‘early Q4’, said Vautier. In the same quarter, the manufacturer will launch the Yendo – the first Walkman phone to feature a touch-screen.
However, Vautier said the manufacturer’s main focus was on developing mid to high-end Android smartphones.
He said: ‘Android is where we feel we can drive and bring a lot of exciting products to market so it is the core platform for us.’
Vautier insisted Sony Ericsson will still use Microsoft Windows, Symbian and its own platform OSE.
UEFA deal evidence of closer ties
Sony Ericsson’s UEFA deal is further evidence of closer ties to Sony, Vautier said.
The deal sees Sony Ericsson leverage Sony’s existing UEFA Champions League Partnership to become the official mobile handset of the UEFA Champions League.
The venture is expected to deliver a UEFA Champions League Mobile Android App aimed at Sony Ericsson’s Xperia portfolio.
‘This is proof of how we are working more closely and how our brands can support each other,’ said Vautier.

Things can only get better from here in my opinion. Hopefully now they can work together to rival Samsung, HTC and Motorola in the top-end smartphone business.

Well it has to be one of their mains strengths - interconnected devices all sharing all kinds of content in and away from the home is the ideal for them.

Android - plain and simple. Google's OS is developing nicely and devices with Android are in high demand and will be for the foreseeable future.

I think
(and the others) should stop trying to play "catch up" with the iPhone. Android has already surpassed iOS. To "follow" the iPhone's path would be a foolish business move since it forces customers to always say "Well, it's an alternative to the iPhone" This isn't ideal since the iPhone is still the top-of-mind product in that statement regardless of whether it's stating the limitations of iOS or not.
I'm glad
will work closely with Sony... as long as they do NOT adopt their designs... I think
new lineup is 100x times better looking than ANYTHING they've made since Sony came into the picture...no more billion-buttons-everywhere. And never... NEVER go back to any proprietary memory crap...er...card format that Sony comes out with.

Adopt Sony's designs?
Which phones had Sony designs in particular?
Few handsets had, until very recently, had any input from Sony, design-wise. The X10 had Sony input because it was to also be launched in Japan and that, to me, is one of the best looking
phones to date.

Thats great news, FINALY SONY and Ericsson realise just how much they have to offer! SE have it ALL, and could so easily surpass Apple thanks their ties with SONY.
I love SONY designs. The original PS3 is beautifuly designed,so are their VAIO laptops, Bravia TVs, Walkmans, eBook readers, headphones and PSP. The X10 clearly had a lot of SONY influence in the design, the black/white with the chrome strip, and buttons remind me of the original PS3 and newer PSP models, very classy looking, none of that "industrial" look everyone else is doing, very typical of SONY to be different. Android does seem like a winner for SE's high-end smartphones, and the UXP apps: TimeScape and MediaScape are genius, they just need to improve the speed and some add some finishing touches here and there, paticularly in TimeScape, MediaScape on the other hand just needs to be faster, other than that a job very well thoughtout and done, i gave up on 3rd party Music players as MediaScape does such a fantastic job,i wish it had DivX/Xvid/mkv support as that would pretty much make it my one and only media player, since it does Music an Pics so well, anyway im looking forward to future SE Android high-ends with UXP UI

Sony are the dogs b*****ks in everything electronic they have almighty power they can use cos they are such a huge international brand in a way that probably every household in the world has had something Sony in it. They now suddenly realise they can use it. And although I am not interested in mobile gaming that is something Sony can use in their favour by making that gaming phone as gaming is so popular and with Sony quality and know how along with Ericsson they could finally hopefully produce the all in one device we all been waiting for

Whatever they do - it is too late for me already. I will never again buy anything from SE no matter the price or features. I am REALLY happy that I sold my Xperia X2 - this was my last SE product!
