My little brother wants the XBOX hooked up to Live, but we're not sure how best to go about it, since it's now quite far away from the router's new position in the house. There's not much signal down in the spare room where the 360 is, so wireless is largely out of the question (I could try a friend's wireless adaptor with a makeshift foil parabola, but I'd prefer not to...).
So anyway, I'd prefer to use a powerline networking kit.
Trouble is, the wall socket on the router's end is on a different ring main to the 360's end. What sort of speed would I need to overcome that in order to get lag-free gameplay, or is that not possible with our wiring configuration?

It isn't, at all, they need to be on the same circuit so to speak, I've used these for years since they came around mainstream. They are good, they do offer good speeds, but in your situation, it wouldn't work. The only thing I could think of is to run a wire from the router to the xbox (but its quite a way away, so out of the question. You could also plug the homeline adaptor where it works and run a wire from there to the xbox, not sure if thats not possible.

For what you will spend, you might be as well upgrading to an N rated router if you don't have one, and the xbox wireless adapters are cheap nowadays too

We are fully N in the house, using a BT Home Hub 2.0, and as far as I know, my Nexus One is N also, but the signal meter app on it was way down in the red when I had a look. The signal has to 'cross' 2 interior walls, a floor, and an insulated ex-exterior wall, hence the poor signal.

Going to be powerline to the nearest same-ring socket then I guess, not perfect, but it'd work at least.
