The Android Development Team has just announced that there are more than 100,000 apps avaliable to download from the Android Market.

It took just three months for Android to go from 70 000 to 100 000 apps, so with an average of 10,000 new apps arriving each month there will always be enough that are compatible and able to be used with any device running the Android OS. The percentage of free apps is still hovering above the 60 percent mark, which is downright impressive. Even games like Angry Birds that come for a fee on other platforms (iOS and webOS) choose the free, add-supported way for their Android versions.

Despite this, Apple's App store still leads by a long way with its 300 000+ apps, but at this point the differences gradually start to lose significance. It's hard to imagine anyone being able to browse through 100 000 apps, let alone try each one of them.
As long as all the important stuff is there and the apps match the quality of those from other markets, most users won't care. And the Google OS official repository has most things perfectly covered. Being a little light on 3D games is probably the only thing that renders it second best at this point.
Meanwhile, the Windows Phone 7 Marketplace hit 1000 apps. This might be 100 times less than what the Android Market could offer you but let's not forget that the first WP7-powered smartphones have just started shipping.

Congratulations to Android

More apps will be added faster because there will be more android devices in a future. I was surprised to see that they took so long to reach this level.

Perhaps it took so long as there was alot of catching up to do with apps & so many devices coming out so fast. Just a thought

but... don't get confused between quality and quantity.
As much as I'm now an iPhone fan, and have many iPhone and iPad apps (there are many iPad apps now that are much better than their iPhone equivalent), I also recognise thats there's alot of nonesense out there.

My experience with various Android apps is that mostly, so far, its the serious apps that have been released to Android so the direct number comparison between iPhone and Android is not really a valid comparison

I'm quite impressed that developers are releasing so many apps based on iPhone apps, but its noticeable that few are unique to Android

Yes there is plenty of pointless apps on App Store & Android Market alike. I prefer apps which are useful for things you need or tasks not silly talking cats

Yep, there is a lot of crap, in all app stores. Im loving the huge support and competition in the Android App Dev world though. WinAmp was just released for Android and a few days later, BAM! PowerAmp comes along, both join a load of high quality media players such as arcMedia, RealPlayer, RockPlayer, YXPlayer, Meridian etc...the wealth of great Health apps like Droidfit to Cardio apps that work with GPS/accelerometer, to Finance apps such as DailyFinance which allows watching the stock exchange upto the minute, managing your portfolio and the rival apps from Bloomberg and others, its extraordinary to have such great quality apps and competition they create amongst devs as at the end of the day we,the consumer get great quality and constant support, sometimes TOO constant
Congrats to Android Market for hitting the 100K Milestone, looking forward to the next 100K and to the hater bloggers excuses for not needing to have a variety of apps, because their fav OS doesnt.
