My cousin just bought herself this phone and asked me what one of the icons mean. I never really pay much attention to icons in the statusbar on Android phones. Basically its two small boxes one in the top left corner of the icon and the second in the bottom right. They are linked by two dotted lines going around the outline of the icon.

Anyone with an idea and possibly a picture to confirm its the one i mention much appreciated.

I think you are referring to the Data connection icon

Like the leftmost icon here?

Opening the status menu and pressing clear doesnt turn data off. It just clears the messages. You need to do the following:

Goto Settings
Goto Wireless Controls
Goto Mobile Network Settings
Remove the tick out of the Data Traffic option.

This turns internet off. If they havent got a data plan of their tariff it would be a wise option as the charges can mount up. Especially if they're on Vodafone or O2.

Another way is from the Standby screen. Press the left menu button. Select Arrange Widgets/Add Widget and scroll down to data traffic to enaboe a widget to turn data on or off. You can also use the Status switch widget but you have to follow the guide above to turn data back on.

Cheers i shall let her know she is on O2 and im not sure if she has a data plan so might be running up a bill without knowing it.

Its a bit stupid that phones just like my N8 all come with internet using apps, widgets and settings set to on. Its almost like they want us to run up a big phone bill..

Thats why T-Mobile's unlimited internet plans have a 3gb limit on Android phones rather than 1gb and i think 5gb on the iPhone !
