A Texas man claims his brand new Motorola Droid 2 exploded as he was having a phone conversation, leaving him with four stitches, the WFAA reported on Thursday. Aron Embry said his Droid 2's screen "burst outward," leaving the phone itself intact but ruining the screen. He was told he wouldn't suffer hearing loss from the incident.

WOW... that's bad!!! I'd expect the usual exploding battery issue... but not from the earpiece!!!
Scary stuff if that's real!

This is the first time I read this case. as you said, jplacson, I was waiting for a battery exploding.
What could have caused this though? Water contact in the earpiece?

I know, I'm trying to think of WHAT part actually exploded. I can't think of anything in the earpiece area that would actually blow up... and if there is... what would've caused it to blow up?

Can an earpiece blow up? No, right? We'd need to see how this phone is assembled and what piece is there?

Thats scary!!
Thats why i always use headphones to avoid such situation.
Tranced you are right. Earpiece cannot blow up. If water - perspiration has gone inside, it would short-circuited the earpiece but not blow it up.

If it burst outwards then why is there not much damage to the device?? Looks more like someone smashed it on his head to me
I just think that there would be more damage in terms of it blowing outwards. And excuse me for saying this the guy looks like a thug

Looks like he smashed it with a ball-peen hammer. Then for good measure used the hammer on himself. Or maybe his wife/girlfriend/boyfriend.
