Since updating my Xperia 10i to 2.1, the phone no longer recognizes a USB connection to my computer. (It can charge, but that's it.)

Anyone else having this problem?

Are you using a USB Hub? Have you tried it on another usb port?

It doesn't work either way: connecting the USB cord directly to the laptop or via the hub.

When I connect the USB to the phone, I don't get the USB icon in the bar nor the prompt for mounting the USB.

@drad: Try changing the USB cable i.e. try a new charger... Worked for me.. it's more likely that the cable has failed.

Now the USB port on the phone has failed entirely. I can no longer charge the phone.

It's not the cable. I have two and neither work.

I've been struggling with customer support at Sony Ericsson for two weeks now. First, they wouldn't repair it because my documentation supposedly wasn't complete. After resubmitting the documentation, they now claim that they cannot honor the warranty because the phone the phone being "optimized for performance on cellular frequencies used in countries outside of the United States and Canada" and "is not authorized by Sony Ericsson, for sale within the United States and Canada."

Of course, the problem has absolutely nothing to do with the phone's performance on US cellular frequencies -- which is perfectly fine. The problem with the phone is purely mechanical -- a defective USB port -- is solely a design/manufacturing defect .

No wonder sales of SE units are down. Truly lousy customer support.

so I picked up a battery charger, which allows me to use the phone again. but, when 2.3 comes out I won't be able to upgrade. (thanks SE for not standing behind your product.)

but this will tide me over until the HTC Sensation comes out this Summer. then SE will be history for me!

@drad... try getting your hands on the usb cable/charger that is shipped with the x10 mini... as mentioned earlier I had the exact same problem:
First the charger died and only jiggling the usb port somehow charged it. but eventually that failed too and only usb charging via pc worked.. and that failed too. I too couldn't charge my phone or update my phone.. thought It was a faulty usb port on my phone.

tried using a variety of chargers of blackberry and nokias... some charged my phone, some overheated the phone.

finally used the x10 mini cable and charger and it worked perfectly. charges the phone perfectly and the usb works great too.

since the exact thing has happened to my friend too, and what I have read of others having the same problem in various forums, the following conclusions may be drawn by me :
1) Some of the usb chargers supplied with the x10 is defective and gives way in a few months of use.
2) the usb port on the phone gets blamed initially, but in a majority of cases it turned out to be a faulty cable.

so do try it out once if u havent, before u send it for repairs, bcos the SE service center guys know bollocks.

Thanks for the suggestion. I'm skeptical that a new cord will make the difference, but it seems sufficiently plausible and the cost is sufficiently minimal to be worth a try.

I ordered the X10 mini USB cord, but not sure if it will arrive before I leave for Europe next week. Once I've had a chance to test it, I'll post my results.

In the meantime, I am getting by with the free-standing battery charger and a spare battery (which I picked up for under $20 US). Only problem with the charger is that it only gets the battery to 88-91% charged (as compared to the phone, which would always charge up to 100%).
