(Reuters) - Google's Android dethroned Nokia's Symbian as the most popular smartphone platform in the last quarter of 2010, ending a reign that began with the birth of the industry 10 years ago.

Research firm Canalys said on Monday phone makers sold a total of 32.9 million Android-equipped phones in the last quarter, compared with Symbian's total sales of 31 million. The landmark piles pressure on Nokia as it struggles to reassert itself at the top end of the mobile handsets market.

Following Apple's 2007 entrance into smartphones, Google rolled out its open-source Android operating system, which has become the standard for smaller phone makers.

Hit models from Samsung Electronics, HTC and LG Electronics helped Android in the quarter, while Symbian suffered from troubles of its owner and main user, Nokia.

"We have seen some strong products from a number of vendors," said Canalys analyst Tim Shepherd.

Although not a huge gap between sales it's certainly an awesome achievement when you think of the short space of time Android has been around compared to Symbian. Yes indeed Nokia may be just K-Nokiaing on Android's door sometime soon

What what what??? i thought this was meant to happen in 2014??? I thought there was a whole flood of Symbian3s coming??? I thought all the Android manufacturers combined weren't going to affect Nokia's Symian??? I thought...

Honestly, no suprises here at all, i kept saying Android would catch up with Symbian with no problem, ofcoarse the Symbian fans were not hearing any of that and its only going to get better for Android this year.
Cant wait to read all the excuses the Symbian community will come up with, should make for a damn good chuckle.

Does it really matter?? As long as their happy in their little Symbian world then who gives a stuff. The gap is closing but I fear that someday Android will become so commonplace it might stagnate or become boring like Symbian. Just a thought. The thought is that will Google take over everything in the mobile world

This might be just the kick up the ass they need to pull symbian back. I wouldn't wish the death of Symbian but I'd like to see them make a come back with some good innovative ideas and a swish UI. It's the consumer that wins in the end.

Android will probably stagnate, and another OS will take over. I'd like to see Nokia drop Symbian and focus on Meego, IMO they were on something big with Maemo5.

Symbian does have alot of potential if they just get it right the usability etc. Having had the Nokia N8 Symbian 3 is a big improvement but still not quite there yet. It's definately more fluid & more fun to use than before.
