Hey,

Before I start, this is a technical quesiton so I'm not expecting many replies if any, but thought I'd ask anyway.

I'm no expert with these things but I'm trying to get a mkv 720p file I downloaded to work on my Sony ericsson Arc. Rather than re-encode (takes ages!) I use a program called gotsent, that repackages the MKV into an MP4 that the phone can then play. Sometimes this works, and phones plays the file flawlessly, other times it fails to play. I use VLC media properties to get the information about the files. Two files the phone plays flawlessly. One already converted as it's a HD mp4 trailer from the web and the other a SD MKV that I
converted.

Fast Furious Trailer works

Stream 0
Type Video
Code: H264 - MPEG-4 AVC (part10) (avc1)
Resolution: 1280x720
Frame Rate: 23.976023

Stream 1
Type Audio
Codec: MPEG AAc Audio (mp4a)
Channels: Stereo
Sample rate: 48000Hz

SD MKV FILM COVERTED TO MP4 works

Stream 0
Type Audio
Codec: MPEG AAC Audio (mp4a)
Channels: Stereo
Sample Rate: 48000 Hz
AAC extension: SBR

Stream 1
Type: Video
Codec: H264 - MPEG-4 AVC (Part 10) (avc1)
Resolution 672.352
Frame rate: 25

Now the one that doesn't work after converting,

720p HD Mkv converted to mp4 using GotSent

Stream 0
Type Audio
Codec: MPEG AAC Audio (mp4a)
Channels: stereo
Sample rate: 48000Hz

Stream 1
Type Video
Codec H264 - MPEG-4 AVC (part 10) (avc1)
Resolution 1280x720
Frame rate 23.9767023.

Does anybody know what is going wrong and why the third file refuses to play?

Thanks for any help.

Dan

I have tried to play mkv 720p with different players (none supports hardware decoding) so they all "lag" and the filetable can't handle files bigger than 4gb (a 720p is often dvd5, 4.3gb) and i know the mobile will have problems to play files bigger than 2gb smooth (even mp4 i think) so i have already given up to play 720p mkv movies in my arc (will never bother to re encode them...)

never tried the way you do it thou. seems kinda random?

i will try, will report later

@danman7_200: Since you are converting the videos to MP4, I'll assume that you are using the default media player.

If thats the case, try playing the file with Rockplayer, so we can see if its the file or the player...

Let us know the result of the test...

Hi,

Thank you for your replies. Rockplayer, QQ player will play the mp4 file that failed using preinstalled media player but it is jerky (does not use graphics acceleration)

The method I use, is actually a pretty decent method on devices that do not support MKV. I originally found this method because I wanted to play MKV's on my xbox 360 without re encoding because it takes so long. This method will take a full length 720 mkv movie and change it to mp4 in about 2 minutes. No re-encoding whatsoever. Thank you about the 4GB limit. I was aware of this and the Gotsent will automatically split the files for me once it passes 4GB

It's just baffling why the first two files will play, but the episode I converted will not when their properties look identical.

I'm determined to find a solution without reencoding the enture mkv but if this is not possible I will admit defeat and have to sell my beloved Arc to get a Galaxy S2. This is a really important usage scenario for me, albeit one i should of done more research with first before buying my arc otherwise I would not be in this situation.

Maybe get a petition going for Sony to implement MKV file support in there phones?
