> connecting to wifi in other countries

Hi all. I have read somehwere a few months ago (when i got my Xperia X10 mini pro, i have read a tutorial) that wifi is not working if you leave the country.. You have to enable something, but i forgot what.
Situation is: me and my GF live in romania. If i enable flight mode and then WEFI, it will turn on the wifi and search and auto connect. I even tried this with SIM not inserted, and still worked here.
My GF travelled to america. (same phone) And she tried to connect and and by what i have understood it wont let her enable wifi or dont know for sure.. (will talk to her later, so i might get the problem).
Phones are vodafone RO branded, so no use to buy a sim card there, because it wont work.
So settings in mobile networks are like this:
- data roaming (its disabled - this is changeable only if data traffic is enabled)
- data traffic disabled ... (phone now in airplane mode, so i guess it doesn't needs to be enabled)
- and mobile network: use GSM only (she switches to UMTS when using Vodafone net, but thats not the case here, as phone is running in flight mode).
And i would like to skype call her on her phone via wifi. Thats why i need to know how to enable and connect to wifi spots if you leave the country.
Can anyone help?

oh this is already long, but anyway, for wifi to work you have to uncheck Airplane mode.

nope. Since 2.1 wifi works in airplane mode. Just enable data roaming (then disable data traffic, weird, but that worked).
