SonyEricssonXperiasmartphonestoreceiveAndroid4.0IceCreamSandwich Sony Ericsson confirmed to somobile that the 2011 range of Android Xperia smartphones will receive the next major Android update when Google releases it later this year.Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich will most likely be released in October/November, but the Xperia update will most likely not be available at that time. The Android Ice Cream Sandwich is the merge of current smartphone version 2.3 Gingerbread and the version 3.0 Honeycomb version for tablets. Ice Cream Sandwich can be installed and run on both smartphones and tablets. Xperia models released this year areXperia Arc SXperia RayXperia NeoXperia Neo VXperia ActiveXperia Mini ProXperia MiniXperia PlayXperia ProXperia Arc

The Sony Ericsson Live with Walkman are also running on Android but it does not carry the Xperia brand. It is uncertain if this model will get the 4.0 upgrade.

I knew they would, but glad to get confirmation. After the X10 mess SE simply cannot afford to f-up in terms of updates, I simply cannot wait to see how Ice Cream Sandwich will run as it will take advantage of the Graphics Accelerator in all Androids for the GUI, so it should be very fluid.

Update: Sony Ericsson has told us that the company has made no official decision to update its 2011 Xperia phones to Android 4.0 – despite the comments from a Sony Ericsson representative at a London press event yesterday. Still, here’s hoping…

Here’s the official statement: “When it comes to future platforms of the Android OS, we will make them available to consumers in a timely manner, as long as they improve the user experience and are viable from a hardware point of view.“
