Giesecke & Devrient (G&D) will present the worlds smallest SIM card during a trade show in Paris next week called CARTE & IDentification and event with 450 exhibitors and 20.000 visitors. The proposed format of the new card is only 12 x 9 mm of size and approximately 0.64 mm thick. As a comparison, a normal SIM is 25 x 15 x 0.76 mm and Micro SIM is 15 x 12 x 0.76 mm small.
Earlier this year, backed by Orange, Apple submitted a new requirement to the European Telecoms Standards Body (ETSI) for a smaller SIM for factor. Apple and Nokia are the currently only two mobile phone makers using the micro-SIM card formats in their mobile phones. But these are obviously not small enough if they want to design even smaller devices.Samples of the new nano-SIM cards has been sent out to operators for testing and if approved by ETSI, it will be implemented by the end of the year. The Nano-SIM card will be backward compatible with existing card slot by using an adapter.

What is the need? I thought the future was putting information internally on the phone so there is nothing to remove anyway, and although I never move my SIM this just just poooooointless!
