According to a new study by research firm GfK, we’re not the only ones captivated by our fruity phones. The report claims that of the survey’s 4,500 participants across Britain, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Brazil, China, the United States, and Japan, 84% of current iPhone owners said they would buy another iPhone in the next twelve months.
That number drops to a comparatively low 60% for Android users…
The news comes as Android is in the midst of a pivot, with Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich seeking to make Google’s offering more attractive, and less daunting to those not so tech-savvy. Perhaps a more user-friendly user interface will help Google’s OS keep users moving forward, and Ice Cream Sandwich does appear to be just the ticket.
GfK analyst Ryan Garner suggested that Apple’s lead may diminish as others catch on:
”Apple is clearly ahead of the game, but developments next year will challenge that”
RIM’s BlackBerry also popped up in the survey, with just 48% of existing owners saying they would stick with the brand for their next purchase.
Windows Phone 7 is also coming to the forefront with some recent software upgrades, but the platform doesn’t garner half of the loyalty that iOS and Android possess.
Will you be buying a new iPhone as your next smartphone, or are the new Android handsets on the horizon enough to tempt you away?

iTunes is a major reason for iPhone loyalty. When you have all of your music, videos, photos and other media located and sorted by software such as iTunes coupled with the ease of use it ties one into the whole ecosystem of iOS. I actually hate iTunes but I can understand it from a business point of view for Apple.
Moving from one iPhone to another is simple and easy, just plug in wait and go. No hassles.

@skblakee, exactly what I've been saying all along... everything is just so easy! putting content on your phone, backing everything up, restoring after a full reset or phone upgrade etc etc
btw, this reminds me of the topic a few months ago:
Religious reaction in brains of Apple fans is one reason for the brand popularity

I'd put it down to two things -
1) the iPhone experience is really, really good for most people
2) the ecosystem, obviously - not just iTunes but the investment people have in apps and other content, and the ease with which it all transfers over to your next phone.
I'm on my third iPhone now, and after returns (I had a bout of screen problems with my 3GS) it's actually the seventh physical iPhone I've had, and yet I can still look up text messages sent and received on my first iPhone 3G in october
2008 and on one level it's still that same phone, because the backup/restore solution is so good - that in itself is one reason to really love iTunes, and be loyal to the iPhone. That and the fact that the 4S is excellent.

Why is Android bigger than ios in the US if iPhone users are so loyal ?

It was a big decision for me to move away from iphone. But after weighing up all the options I decided in the end the galaxy nexus was the best one for me. And I will get an ipod touch so I keep the best of both worlds.

And here is etaab with his usual post:
Does nobody consider its nothing to do with how good it is, but simply because Apple's brand identity is so strong now, people would never consider buying another phone that isnt an iPhone ?

Nokia never had that strong a brand loyalty afaik though. Apple made mobile phones much more cool with their idiot proof interface. People who once would buy dumb featureless budget handsets are shelling out for iPhones for their simplicity. I see people in their 70's using iPhones, whereas 5 years ago those same people would be using a £10 handset they bought from ASDA.
So i think peoples loyalty to Apple is much more to do with their successfully well earned brand, rather than anything it has over any other competitor.

I actually think Nokia have an extremely strong fan base. It's easy to forget living in the Western world where the iPhone is popular, but there are so many places around the world where people only know of Nokia and would not consider buying anything else, although they're loosing marketshare I do believe this to still be the case. Even in the UK the Lumia got a bigger reaction then the new google phone, and has sold out in places. It should be interesting with the company's turn around, will we see budget cheap phones running WP7 for the market which Nokia currently dominates? Maybe WP7 but with limited features of the OS, as to not compete with high end ones...
As for the OP topic, I don't find this surprising considering iOS and Apple is all one brand. Android on the other hand has a load of manufacturers who each customise their OS differently. People go from android phone to android phone, and maybe not feel as loyal because they switch to another brand. Also as these users will find them not having the same interface they are more likely to choose something else like WP7 or even the iPhone. iPhone users on the other hand have that continual interface, are more likely to stick to their comfort zone, but also the Apple brand which I think is what people are also loyal to.
