Thorsten Heins, chief executive of Research in Motion, has told the Telegraph that manufacturers such as Sony or Samsung could licence the new BlackBerry operating system.

The troubled technology giant cannot compete with larger manufacturers and so must look at how to get more budget smartphones into the market, Heins says.

“We don’t have the economy of scale to compete against the guys who crank out 60 handsets a year. We have to differentiate and have a focused platform. To deliver BB10 we may need to look at licensing it to someone who can do this at a way better cost proposition than I can do it. There’s different options we could do that we’re currently uinvestigating.”

I quite like what I have seen of BB10 and having played with the playbook I do think RIM have a very promising OS. However, I doubt anyone would licence it when they are doing better with Android.

He is saying they are investigating the possibilities so letls see what happens.

FINALLY!!!

WOW, they have finally come to their senses took them long enough, this is a good thing, and will put more pressure on Apple, Google and Microsoft
RIM still own in security and enterprise, with their OS in multiple OEM devices, will mean it gets to an even wider audience,i hope they find a partner soon.

True, their security is unrivalled but if they still want to be in the handset market then this move could pose a problem for them. There really would be no point in buying a Blackberry if people can get it from the likes of Samsung.

It would most likely be people like me who crave for the physical QWERTY keypad and we aren't many anymore to sustain them in the long run.

In terms of business it makes sense but then again, I keep wondering if there'll be any takers.

Its an interesting business decision, and its success hinges on how its is implemented.

As an OS, I don't think BB has what it takes to take on Android or iOS, let alone Windows Phone (8). In that respect, if BB licensed the entire OS with the hope of seeing Samsungs running BB OS, I don't see how there will be a lot of takers. If their target is budget phones, that market to me does not crave the enterprise and security solutions BB OS brings to the table.

If they license out parts of the OS, offer the enterprise email services, and this would be an add on to a device running Android or iOS, this might work.

BBM does not have the attraction it used to, especially with the advent of IM solutions like Whatsapp or Viber.

I think in addition to exploring this licensing option, BB should themselves get on the Android bandwagon or even Windows Phone - how about both? Like Samsung and HTC?

Well, looks like they are looking to licence for budget phones only targeting emerging markets. Their primary intent apparently is to compete in the high-end sector with BB10 Blackberry phones.

Hmmm... would Samsung, HTC or Sony agree to making budget phones for Blackberry?

I will wait to see what the final decision from RIM is.

The best would indeed be to rather license out their BIS/BES services along with BBM to Android and iOS, that would make them a very important part of those platforms.

Anyway, licensing out BB10 OS is also a step in the right direction, IMO, if they get enough partners.

If, and only if, Samsung and Sharp are interested in manufacturing budget phones then I guess it is good for RIM.

I hope they get another interested party, but two is more than enough for a struggling company at this moment. Who knows, if things turn out great then we might get more players into this.

It would also mean I won't be buying into a dying company. I really like BB10 or QNX if you like, I have never liked an OS this much since Meego and UIQ before that.


EDIT: Just read that article at HoFo and it seems to be just speculation.
