We're hearing more and more about upcoming flexible screens from various manufacturers.

Can someone enlighten me as to what the point of these might be? Will it be for a curved wristwatch type of display?

What about viewing angles?

I think it would definitely be useful, if it can flex then it can deflect/distribute a lot of energy on impact, then we would no longer worry about shattering the screen in case we do drop our phones.

Flexible screens may see its future on future car windshields and glasses but for smartphone use, I don't think they are that useful, next year we may be able to see curved designs to showcase this tech.

Good point!

However, should mobile phone screens also not be scratchproof? How will the combine the toughness of Corning Gorilla Glass with a flexible screen?

I guess it will just give more scope for designers to come up with more interestingly shaped concepts.

If the whole phone itself would be flexible then you can wear it around your arm.
More room in your pockets for other stuff, and a more futuristic looking cellphone thats wraped around your arm

@ goldenface

That's what I'm hoping for too, that they will develop some sort of flexible scratch resistant glass to go with it. If it's done then we'll get much more durable screens. Screen will simply bend/bounce when it hits the pavement due to accidental drop, saving it from shattering

These flexible screens would be good for other devices but phones. I'm sure they'd be helpful in the health area.

I like Nokia's concept and they showcased it in 2011.

I'm thinking it will be most useful for advertising agencies... where scratches don't matter that much. Blimps, flags, banners, t-shirts and such. You'll likely see them as independent pre-programed media that plays one thing at a time then years down the road would be integrated into other applications. Just my guess.
