Abandoning/Disowning ... not likely .... Sony has had mounting competition along with the majority of users in various market segments globally where they feel no real NEED to ugprade their existing ultrabooks any longer. See Microsoft was VERY smart to go with the Surface/2, and Surface Pro/2 because now their essentially tablets, very powerful ones that include their desktop productivity suite of applications free (the product includes a lifetime license). The key is that no manufacturer has figured out users soon and eventually - VERY soon - want a tablet that can fully be an ultrabook powerful computer with seemless Touch-to-Keyboard experience that is VERY light!
Within 3yrs you'll see Tablets, brand new ones in that time, running MUCH more complex powerful and well designed applications than what we're using on Android today. Android 5 should be a MAJOR step in that direction ... to be honest Google needs to KILL the current "java" coding for the linux kernel and make if fully object oriented as a code base (if it isn't already) ... combine their Chrome OS with Android and then really blow the doors! This would be Apple's primary fear ... but until then they'll sing on the way home from work

Windows Phone is
free and MS made sure that OEMs can use their Android devices to run WP by removing the requirement for the 3 capacitive buttons and moving them to "on screen"
The reasons for them not to produce a windows based phones are very few.. it would require a relatively low investment on their part and they can move more boxes

I agree but that all depends on hardware developments as well.. you can't really have complex applications running on weak hardware, unless they are very well optimized.
If Google gets rid of the javaVM model I might actually consider Android as an OS alternative, but until then.. nah.. its just not as clean as it should be.
Microsoft's NT kernel seems to scale very well.. I have to say that I am surprised that they got that thing running on those weak ARM chips (relative to Intel's core chips) and they got the networking stack to work somewhat efficiently. Only a few years ago saying that windows NT can run on smartphones would've sounded like a joke...
So they have a good opportunity to make those 2 in 1 / hybrid machines a reality. But again, they are waiting on Intel to produce the chips for that to happen. BayTrail was a very good step forward, and whatever comes next will make it even better.
On the core side they (intel) will go down to 14nm before anyone else, but their price points in that segment are unrealistic..no one wants $1200 machines anymore.

I'm hoping that one day Sony will divert their activities by indulging themselves into Windows realm. A Xperia device running WP 8.1 will be a real killer.
