Unless i'm missing something very obvious, does no else think the lack of T9 predictive text on the new p800 a HUGE mistake? I've been waiting on this phone in the UK for over 6 months and now that its almost here, i don't know if i still want it. I send over 850 text a month and am now very fast using one hand & predictive text. I don't want to have to go back to one-hand multi tap or worse, using 2 hands to "write" on the screen.... whats your opinion?

This has been discussed in loads of posts previously...

Please check them before starting a new post on the subject! But hey - welcome and I hope you get as much use out of these forums as I do!

I agree about the SMS problem.. The question is whether they included T9 on a firmware update in the future.

I have to say it looks doubtful

Many people claim the qwerty keyboard is faster than t9.
But you have to use 2 hands yes...
If you can't accept it. You should buy nokia 7650. It's the second best phone out there.(the 3650 will probably be better but the keyboard looks unfrienfly)
The 7650 isn't all that bad either(it sorta pales compared to the p800 but...)

I do also want T9 cause I used it a lot. Handwriting works perfect for me, no problem at all!
However, this matter is heavilly discussed in every forum I know and you should knew that there is no T9 in p800. I was aware of this limitation before I get it. Next time be more carefull with what you purchase pal.

He hasn't bought yet....
And my advice to him is to try out the virtual qwerty keyboard first.
It's 2 handed but fast.

Thanks for your responses guys and apologies for bringing up something that was already done to death.. as a newby, i hadn't noticed it..

There are 2 points from what you have said...

1) I will never buy a 7650, primarily because i'll never own a Nokia (long story) and also because having played with the phone, i simply don't like it. I was also intriuged to learn by a mate who works for CPW that 70% of the units they sold in the first 3 months were returned because customer didn't like them, they were too big, too heavy etc etc)

2) I send over 800 messages a month - mostly while doing something else, so any 2 handed operation is out of the question. A multi-tap option is a step back and loyal as i am to Sony/Ericsson (P768, T28, R520, T68, T68i), i am quite staggered by the blatant stupidity to release what is in effect the best phone in the market anywhere in the world, and miss off such an important feature. Its like selling a new car with "oops sorry, we didn't bother with a foot brake, never mind there is a hand brake instead"...

that should set you off

@Gordy, i`ve used a p800 here in UK for 6 weeks & i find the virtual qwerty keyboard faster than t9 (i was a fast t9 user beleive me) because its actualy LESS taps per word than t9.
But its 2 handed as you say.
I get shouted down on esato when i say p800 doesn`t need it so alot of users must miss t9.
All i will say is if you need to write a sms single handed you will find the p800`s multitap is good & has a nice short time gap between "same button different letter" action. but in reality multitap is always going to be crap.
Think of it another way, if the reason you type sms while doing other stuff is because of lack of time then something faster than t9 could be a bonus

@Gordy, if your primary function is one-handed SMS, then don't get the P800. It's that simple. The P800 may or may not gain predictive text in the future... but I wouldn't get it on that premise.

You have to remember that the P800 is targetted at a specific market. People who use PDAs. Hence the touchscreen. I personally love Jot. My P800 has become my primary business tool. Not a secondary one. So, if you need a phone that does one-handed SMS well... then I think you should look at other phones.

I'd actually recommend the Nokia 6100... but since you don't like Nokia (Good for you! ) All I can say is stick with the T68i or wait for its successor in Q2.

The P800 can still come in handy for one-handed SMS during those times when you only need to reply with an OK, Yes, or even ones with 5 or fewer words. In cases where you need to send a long reply then it is so easy to open the flip, take the stylus out of the side, and write (I usually stop or pause to write when I am walking, I will never ever ever walk and do text at the same time).

Before the P800 came you could never make me reply to an SMS msg, even with the T9 around then. If someone sends me a text msg, I would call that someone back. BUT NOW, text me and I'll text you back with a story.

How can you say it doesnt need t9.for the amount of money it costs plus monthly contract on top (dont say sim free as it works out the same price and you still have to pay for calls etc)
it should have everything yes its more than just a phone but it is still a phone at the end of the day otherwise it would be a pda and the palm tungsten t and others would be far better than it.
as for a key board thats a joke the idea of and sms is a short msg ie quick to reply or start.
mulitap is a pain turning on the virtual keyboard will take more than one press i bet and if any on suggests a chat board you should get a life peolpe dont have time or the need for those things.they work at home or at work not in the rest of life were you use you phone the most
