got the same problem:
Even if the connector fits on the phone, the cable you are using will not work with T300 (wrong wire matching, I think); I got a brand new USB cable and now the PC recognizes the phone.
cables for T39 and up are reported to work, whilst older cables (T20, T29) don't.

And now...the big question!

Does anyone know how to setup GPRS modem using the USB data cable (no infrared)?

I just went in a PC store and bought one...
mine is "Palladio USB GSM data cable" (for ericsson phones, of course), but it is just an OEM cable branded by "digicom".
The bundled software is "handset manager" from MOBILE ACTION TECHNOLOGY INC. (it has drivers too) and SE "official" software works well.

Note: some softwares actually work ONLY with an infrared connection, so it will be a better choice if you can swap your cable with an IrDa adapter (more costly, but worth the difference, and you can use it with any other ir-enabled device too).

cheers!
