Now that I have finally succeeded in accessing email; in the to: line, is there any way to browse a list of email addresses stored in the phone book?

Yes!
Go to the To Line, Highlight it, press Yes.
Add name? Appears, Press Yes. Now you see a phone book icon, an arrow pointing towards it, and the letters to. Press the joystick in the direction the arrow points, press Yes and select Phone Book.
This is actually a lot quicker and simpler when you are doing it on the phone!
