Well, I've been lurking on Esato for a few months now trying to get information on the P800 and since I've now got one I thought I'd try and give something back to the Esato community.

I've had the phone since Friday and the bottom line is that I'm a very happy P800 owner. As a piece of technology then this thing is about as close to science fiction as a consumer device has come for ages.

I guess to put it into perspective then I should say that I've not been at the cutting edge for a while and I've moved from a Palm/Nokia 8210 to the P800 so that's quite a leap.

I won't go into detail about the phone but here are some impressions and also some things that I wish I'd known when I bought it!

1. It takes Orange about a day to set up the GPRS account so don't spend ages trying to get e-mails and surf the web when you first buy it and think that you're doing something wrong.

2. Despite what it says, the PC Suite that comes on the CDs is NOT the same version as the one on the web. Ignore the one that comes with the phone and download the one from the SE site. The one on the CD didn't work for me (trying to synchronise) and the one on the web does without any problem.

3. As has been stated before it doesn't synchronise Outlook categories with P800 Folders - that's a real shame.

4. Useful things that are in the manual but were a bit hard to find - 1) In flip closed mode press 0 # to bring up the call list 2) in flip closed mode press and hold 2-9 to bring up your contacts list

That's all that comes to mind except to say that I am a very, very, very happy P800 owner. Although in terms of technical specs it is not a quantum leap ahead of some other devices, in terms of the way the whole package fits together then the sum is definitely greater than the parts.

A landmark device imho.

gadget, yup they are different version numbers but the documentation insists (wrongly) that they are the same so some people may follow me and initially not bother to d/l the web version.

Darren,

Cheers for the tips - I'm pretty happy with the phone although hope that SE will look at some of the missing functionality such as anniversaries/birthdays in the organiser and profiles, etc.

The one thing I'm struggling to come to terms with is getting anything done quickly in flip closed mode so your tips have helped. I hadn't really noticed it until now but the jog dial would be much easier (beiong right-handed) on the right-hand side. Also, I'm sure there are a few other little tips for flip-closed mode that will allow me to use it more like a phone. At the moment, I end up opening the flip for just about everything ...

Apparently the Orange manual was wrong about the phone lock code too. (it says 1111, it's actually 0000)

Any more tips ?

C

I don't have an orange P800 and on mine, when the flip is closed the ok button works as call list, indeed Call list is displayed on screen just above the ok button.

Is it different on Orange phones such that you need this 0 #?

OK button brings up contacts list, not call list, on Orange phones masseur.

can't imagine why they would want to change that. very strange. I have R1B still and will be upgrading soon so perhaps its changed in R1D as opposed to being something specific to orange.

Sounds likely, i'm not so sure us Orange P800 users actually have a customised version of the software - imho, they just preloaded their GPRS/WAP/MMS settings, put the custom startup/shutdown videos on, stuck a crappy orange sticker to the lower faceplates then locked the handset to the network.

Thus hopefully it won't be a problem getting firmware upgraded - i'll effectively have a sim free P800 once i get the unlock codes! (i've already removed all of the above )

I got mine on Friday

Good

Happy with build quality.
Like it with the flip on (would be more awkward as a phone without).
Hand writting recognition. Much better with this than iPAQ stuff.
Camera good enough for what I need (never intended as camera replacement).
Happy with Orange and no problems with logo. Just hope theres no Firware Upgrade issues (as originally with classic T68 on Orange).

Bad/Needs Looking into

If you enable screen lock you can't cancel alarms without entering screen lock password (try it as an alarm clock to get you up & you will know what I mean).

Really annoyed that vibration alarm only works with incomming call & mail. Does not work with Clock or PDA alarms. (Major issue for me as I work in a noisy factory with intention of P800 replacing my iPAQ. NEED those vibrations - sort it!!!)

I asked the question on here months ago regarding Sync of catagories before I got my P800 and answer was yes! Now find its a NO. Even my old Psion Revo PDA synced catagories. Just spent a day putting all my entries back into catagories. This must be sorted soon as Major issue.

As a phone its great, as a PDA it needs some tweaking.

In flip closed mode then the middle of the five shortcuts will be displayed above the OK key and will be activated if you press okay.

You can change the flip closed shortcuts in control panel->flip closed shortcuts so you just set the middle on to be the one that you will used most frequently in flip closed mode.

I originally had it as contacts but when I discovered the shortcuts I described above then I have changed it to calendar (which shows you diary and tasks for today). That's just a personal preference though.

One other thing that I found didn't work for me was the magic word, voice dial thing. I chose a great magic word that would never come up in conversation and then on Monday called home five times (without me knowing) as I was in a meeting.

What I've now done is activated voice dial but deleted the magic word. Now, if you're in flip closed mode then you can press and hold the jog dial and it then lets you voice dial. Good enough for me.

Keep those tips coming.
