buy an unlocked one, that way your options stay open concerning providers. And if you travel it might be good to use another SIM.

as it stands, if you buy a phone from orange it is locked so you can only use it on orange.
orange & t-mobile (and therefore virgin, which uses t-mobile's transmitters) use the 1800 frequency, whereas vodafone & o2 use the 900 frequency.
if you buy a sim free phone, or an unlocked one on a voda or o2 contract (assuming voda don't keep locking their handsets) then you could use any gsm sim card as the phone is tri-band, that is, it can also operate on the 1900 frequency used in north america.
if you buy one on orange or t-mobile, it will only work on that network.

yeah i understand the locking proceedures, but my p800 is locked to orange. when it is unlocked it will work on o2 will it not? its just my friend said that they can be tampered with (banding he called it) so that even unlocked it will only work on orange and t-mob. i hope this isnt so!

If the phone is unlocked, it can be used with ANY gsm provider in the world. It doesnt matter who it was originally locked too...
