Joining forces to develop for Symbian OS
Ericsson Mobility World
Nokia and Sony Ericsson to align developer tools for Symbian OS smartphones
More than 200 mobile developers joined Symbian, Sony Ericsson and Nokia in Rome, Italy, in the last week of January at the co-hosted conference called “Developing Applications for Open Mobile Devices”.
Friday, February 21, 2003
It was a unique opportunity for some extremely innovative application developers to get together with both Sony Ericsson and Nokia to talk and learn about developing applications for wireless devices based on Symbian OS.
Delegates at the conference listened to presentations from the hosts, Symbian, Sony Ericsson and Nokia, from tools vendors, network operators and a developer, and gained valuable advice on porting applications between Series 60 and UIQ. Attendees could also pose questions to an expert development panel and enjoy an exhibition of the latest technology, handsets, applications and tools for Symbian OS.
Sony Ericsson's Ulf Wretling and Nokia's Colin McKell-Redwood agreed that Symbian OS has the technological and strategic advantages that make it the industry's preferred smartphone platform.
As smartphones impact the enterprise market and Symbian OS becomes the dominant operating system, Sony Ericsson and Nokia made the following pledge to Symbian OS developers:"Nokia and Sony Ericsson have joined forces to align the developer community by working on a common development process for Symbian OS."
Nokia and Sony Ericsson have also announced an agreement to further strengthen the momentum behind Symbian OS by aligning tools for the UIQ and Series 60 terminal software platforms, and by creating an application certification program (read the press release). This will substantially assist developers to develop, certify and deploy applications for Symbian OS phones, thereby accelerating availability of new applications for the new generation of multimedia mobile phones based on Symbian OS.
This collaboration between Sony Ericsson, Nokia and Symbian will make it possible for developers to use a unified tool set to develop Symbian OS applications for products using both UIQ and Series 60 terminal software platforms. Developers will also benefit from easier verification processes and faster time-to-market.
The UIQ and Series 60 UI platforms address very different segments of the smartphone market. UIQ and Series 60 UI platforms are therefore complementary in providing handset manufacturers with a choice on which to innovate and differentiate their products.
Sony Ericsson is committed to Symbian OS and UIQ for its smartphones and future mid-tier products. With the P800, Sony Ericsson is in a unique position to allow developers to leverage the application experience through touch screen, a large display and a high-performance device. “Flight mode” is a P800 benefit that allows end-users to become more productive or simply kill time by playing a good game wherever they are, whenever they want.
Ulf Wretling, director of Sony Ericsson’s Developer Program, and Marco Tucci, manager of Ericsson Mobility World Italy, explained how Sony Ericsson and Ericsson collaborate through Ericsson Mobility World to stimulate and enable applications and content development and to be able to provide end-to-end solutions to network operators and service providers. Through Ericsson Mobility World Italy, Sony Ericsson is able to offer Italian developers a local point of contact for business development, operator relations, end-to-end testing and application sales to operators, as well as a tailored partnering program.
One example of a developer who has benefited from the local support of the Sony Ericsson/Ericsson Mobility World developer programs is the Italian developer Bitween. Bitween has successfully ported its Remote Control application between Series 60 and the UIQ-based Sony Ericsson P800. Remote Control is a powerful software tool that allows you connect your Sony Ericsson P800 directly to your PC via the Internet from any location. This lets you collect important information, read e-mail, send faxes, edit a document, see an excel file, reboot your machine or control the status of your Web server from anywhere in the world. With this application you can have full mobile access to your PC from your P800.
Many people were interested in seeing a demo of this application and of the mobile phones and development tools available for Symbian OS at the Rome conference. Based on the success of this event, it is expected to be the first in a new series of joint Symbian OS developer events.

Enabling Visual Basic Developers to Write Mobile and Wireless Applications for the Symbian-Based P800 Smartphone
Cannes, France (February 17, 2003) - AppForge and Sony Ericsson have partnered to enable developers to write Visual Basic applications for the Sony Ericsson P800 smartphone. Sony Ericsson will begin shipping the AppForge mobile runtime, Booster™, as a standard feature on its devices beginning in Q1 2003.
“We are very excited to introduce our new products to Visual Basic developers worldwide,” said Rikko Sakaguchi, Senior Vice President of Applications and Content at Sony Ericsson. “By enhancing our products with AppForge’s mobile application platform, Microsoft developers can write applications directly to the Symbian-based P800 product line without having to use additional technologies.”
The Sony Ericsson P800 includes a tri-band phone, digital camera, video player, MP3 player, and PIM suite including contact manager, calendar, e-mail and messaging applications. The P800 is already s hipping in Europe and Asia, and will be shipping to North America in Q1 2003. Existing P800 owners will be able to download the AppForge Booster runtime free of charge from the Sony Ericsson and AppForge websites.
“The Sony Ericsson P800 is the most sophisticated converged device on the market today,” said Mark Lummus, Vice President of Business Development at AppForge. “By shipping AppForge Booster on the P800, Sony Ericsson is enabling millions of Microsoft® Visual Basic® developers to create applications for the P800, thereby positioning it as the leading product in its category.“
AppForge’s mobile and wireless platform began shipping in December 2000. AppForge initially supported Palm OS devices and subsequently added support for the Pocket PC and Symbian operating systems. More than 10,000 applications have been written for the AppForge development platform, which is in use by more than 80,000 developers worldwide.
“For the past year, our developers have been requesting support for smartphones and other converged devices from manufacturers like Sony Ericsson,” Lummus continued, “Support for the Sony Ericsson P800 is one of the most anticipated enhancements to AppForge MobileVB.”
