Hi,

Is there another C++ compiler out there which can be used to make applications for the P800 or only CodeWarrior? If CodeWarrior has a monopoly in this state then EVERY developer who posted an app on my-symbian in C++ has a copy? I cannot believe developers are so rich, even when writing a small freeware application they go out and purchase the IDE software.

Can't you just develop a C++ program with some Microsoft tool and upload to the P800?

That's the thing (and bad decision of SE in my opinion...), you CAN develop C++ apps for the P800 "theoretically" using only the free SDK supplied by Sony Ericsson... but the catch is you cant compile code in order to be able to run it in the P800 emulator on your PC. What this means is that to debug and test you work, you have to ALWAYS compile your code for Symbian OS and copy your compiled app to your own P800 and test it there directly. I dont know about you, but if this doesnt zap your productivity time I dont know what will.

They should at least have included even a command-line compiler for us to have the ability to test it in the P800 emulator. That way we only install it on the phone when its ready for final testing and production.

Do they really want applications for their phone or not???

Yeah, it's pure crap...
And the PersonalJava implementation is so crappy you cannot do anything either.

I read somewhere that Borland C++ Builder Mobile Edition supports Symbian OS. Maybe people can use that? Also, on my-symbian.com there are a LOT of freeware apps which were developed in C++, did all these people BUY Codewarrior, or did they just code blind and test it on their P800?

The way they got their CodeWarrior's is the way anyone get's almost everything:
PIRACY.

Piracy? I tried finding it but to no avail. Probably didn't look in the right place. Why doesn't Metrowerks release a free, simplified version, like Borland did with the JBuilder7 Personal?

Yes, I really hope they do. I'm a developer too and would like to "play" around with programming simple programs (and who knows what we'll all be able to accomplish in the future...) for my P800.

But if simply "trying" to program for the phone required me to buy an Integrated Development Environment totally designed & PRICED for Development Companies also looking to develop for the phone, then I think I'll just lay off the dream of programming my phone for the moment.

All our creative and intuitive programming skills -- wasted.

There is a 15 days try period for codewarrior. So you can try and compile whith it.
And if you're a little bit "windows compliant", you'll find a way to 'reinstall it' for another 15 days period...

Besides, you can try GnuPOC, a free development tool for p800 : http://gnupoc.sourceforge.net/ (you need to be under Linux).

Can you expound on that "windows compliant" thing? Thanks... you'll be helping a lot of developers...
