Hi!
I just sat here and wondered (because it haven't got a P800)... Is a .SIS file a installer you execute on the p800, or is it just a file containing the app, and you store it on eg. a MS Duo?

Please, some of you hardcore P800 users out there must know this. When you install an application, is it a guide to install, like on a computer, or do just place the file??

well I haven't done any application installs direct from my phone yet, so I can't comment on that, however...
I have downloaded a .SIS file from the web onto my PC. It is a setup program for an application (containing all the files.) If I double click on it it installs the application onto my connected P800.
The .SIS extension is associated with the "au3party.exe" application (friendly name: "Install Software Application") which I think downloads the whole .SIS file onto the C: Drive of your P800 (the internal memory) then unpacks and installs it onto the Drive of your choice.
This says to me that it is most probably possible to download the .SIS file via GPRS straight onto the phone and install from there. After all, SE can't expect everyone who wants to install 3rd party applications to have a PC right?

Thnx for the explanations, guys!
As I continue to read about this device, it seems more and more wonderful everytime I look at it!
Think I'll puchase one!

.sis files first appeared on the series 5 Psion machines as the Epoc(now Symbian OS)version of install shield type application on the PC. It is the method of creating a self extracting & installing archive file which also creates an install record to full remove all the installation files (again like install sheild on PC's. .sis files can be run through PC suite or directly on the Symbian device.

sort of like a script?
I mean they are not an executable by themselves but more like a makefile except the app is probably already compiled...
Or have I missunderstood?
