Why did
choose GSM 1800 for the third band on the Americas phones. Isn't GSM 900 more common, globally, than GSM 1800?

900 was the first band in Europe but has then been replaced with 1800 which now is more widely used and has better quality.

900 band beeing replaced? More voice quality? Sorry! From wich planet are you? Most of the countries in Europe run a 900 mhz GSM network. In many areas 1800 stations are used to make the coverage even better.
However, the 1800 mhz band is widely used in Asia. That might be the reason. As you might know, Europe is a very saturated market, and it is also small compared to the Asian one.

And the Asian market is actually very intense. The Philippines alone sends more SMS daily than Europe combined.

I think that could be due to the cost of sending an SMS in Europe! In Asia (singapore especially) it is damn cheap, normally you get about 360free a month.
Not so in europe (at least not in Ireland anyways ;p)

Will SE make the 610 available for those of us who desire a world phone, and not just an "Americas" phone? To me, 900MHz is more valuable than 850MHz. I don't travel to Latin America, but I do travel to Europe.

As I know, GSM was introduced to operate on 900Mhz in europe in the begining. The bandwidth(25Mhz) became to be quite not enough as being shared by several network companies and the growing of phone users. 1800M was introducf later. Some companies began to run dual band while some kept staying on 900 only and some new joined run 1800 only. It's the same in asia. Some small companies accepted the tech in the US, but the frequency has totally different utilisation N America. So GSM1900 got to be available.

thanks for the responses, as a citizen of the Western hemisphere, its going to be interesting over the next four or five years because you will see GSM 850 take off in all countries from Canada south to Argentina. Thanx for the info though about 900 and 1800
