can i only use a phone that i bought through my wireless carrier with their service? for instance if i want to get a t610 when they come out but my carrier (t-mobile) doesn't offer them in my area right away do i have to wait?

you'll be able to use it, but they probably won't support it- ie, if you have a problem with the phone on their network, they won't care.
