Today I took my phone into a SonyEricsson Service in the UK for a software upgrade.As it is less than 1 year old and I still have the original receipt the upgrade is being done free of charge.
The T68i was bought as an Orange phone (i.e on the Orange UK network), later it was unlocked and then used on the Virgin (UK) network.
I have been told, by a Service centre Personnel, that upgrading will change the phone back to a
locked Orange phone. Thus I will have to get it unlocked once again.
I was not aware of this and I have not seen this mentioned in other posts.

I have just got my phone back after an upgrade and all is well at present.
It was still unlocked and the phonebook was still there.
