Can you upgrade the software or firmware yourself besides sending it to a dealer?

Best way is to so it through a Sony Service Centre (you can phone 0870 523 7237 for your nearest centre) or through some phone company like Carphonewarehouse.

I did it yesterday.

If your phone is less than 1 year old and you have the original receipt then The Sony Ericsson Service centres will do it free.

Unlocked phones stay unlocked.

Will I lose any of my downloaded ringtones and pictures when I send in my phone to have it flashed? I currently have firmware version R5D007. I just called and once you read the numbers off the back of the phone they will tell you if its still under warranty or not.

What happens if you wish to update firmware but you don't have a receipt for your phone - are you expected to pay? and if so how much?

Also, how do you go about unlocking your phone legitimately. Again, does it cost? And, will "they" not update firmware if you unlock it yourself?

Thanks

joebmc: You will notice a big difference with R7A, its much quicker, better RF, the list goes on.

@uk-z

I didn't have the receipt for my phone and it cost me UK£5 to get its software upgraded, its cheap as David Dickinson's chips.

Regarding getting your phone unlatched legitimatly, try speaking to the network that the phone is latched to - they will have some criteria for your phone to be unlatched (ie must be on the network for a year) but they will be able to do it.

The cost for this can vary, o2UK usually charges UK£15.
