I don't see many of these messages so I wanted to post a short story of my success with a T68i upgrade yesterday.
I self-updated an AT&T T68is h/w version 10C from R5C to R7A013 firmware with absolutely no problems. The update was done with firmware from omega-networks.net (thanks to Omega for sourcing firmware) and while the flash process was a nerve-wracking 15 minutes, it all went smoothly. No Bluetooth or standby problems at all. Though I was nervous about doing it myself, I used WinXP with a broadband connection and the Ericsson flashing cable. Not a single problem.
The only down side is that the firmware upgrade itself is nothing special. It may be the tiniest bit faster. Audio quality doesn't seem to have changed, and signal reception does not seem to have improved in any noticeable way. At best it may be pulling a quarter or half bar of extra signal stability over R5C. In the future, I will look for more concrete information on added functionality before risking flashing firmware, but at least I know it's safe now.

I would like to know if I get my firmware upgraded will I lose any of my downloaded pictures, ringers, or themes?

Yes, you'll lose them. Always have a backup before having an upgrade done. In fact always do just in case you lose your phone as well.
