finally tried this, and this is what I think of it
1. it really works, with nice colours etc
2. it is a bit slower than realtime emulation
3. screen of P800 is a bit too little to fit fullscreen emulation. it will scroll a little to L or R depending where you move your pen. Resize is possible but graphics detoriate a bit too much
4. you need parent roms since most of the time I got missing roms errors just DLing the rom as suggested in the manual. Make sure to use 0.37b6 compliant roms
5. controls are weird but works surprisingly good (using pen to move around!). But due to little slow emulation it renders most games not so playable
6. it crashes quite quickly if you had too many missing roms msgs
7. sound emulation is absent or very buggy, so leave it off
so my suggestions would be:
- have option to FIX screen in middle, it would only lose 2mm each side
- have option to use frameskip to speed up emulation
- have option to play 90° rotate screen for those games who need it
but still nice to play 1942/Galaga/Amidar/Arkanoid/Tetris or Choplifter on your p800 I admit, esp since it's free. Haven't succeeded in playing pacman since I don't know which roms I need beside the pacman rom...

Can you tell us exactly what roms are playable.
do you have a list or something?

find the romlist at
http://www.yipton.net/
but try to use the older pre 1986 games (those are the most addictive!), they aren't resource hungry and are small zipfiles anyway. I'll try to write a FAQ for those interested with installation tips etc

Ok, seems like a lot of you're still in lost. I'll explain again. MAME romset exists in two form, one is stand alone romset and the other one is in split rom format. What you donwload from the WEB is usaully in split form format as this is the most effective distribution format because the size is relatively small (while of course if you alreaday have the parent set in the first place). MAME team comes up with this form because is will conserve a lot of space considering the game it emulate are in the range of 3,000+.
I'll take PACMAN as an example:-
First, go and download the PACMAN.ZIP file from the WEB (you can try
www.mame.dk). After getting this file, you can try to run it but of course you can't as the emulator will prompt you for missing rom files. This is because part of the file is in another romset. If you read carefully in the ROM INFO section in MAME.DK, you'll notice that you needs anther romset which is called PUCKMAN.ZIP. In fact when you first put the PACMAN file into your P800 and ask EMAME to scan for game, you'll see PUCKMAN, PACMAN and some other PACMAN clone title are list there. This because all of these games are sharing part of rom files from the parent romset, in this case PUCKMAN.ZIP.
Now go and download PUCKMAN.ZIP. After that combine PACMAN.ZIP and PUCKMAN.ZIP together into one zipfile called PACMAN.ZIP.
Now put that file into the ROMS folder in your P800 and now...viola..PACMAN works.
In fact if you want to conserve space, you don't have to combine PUCKMAN and PACMAN zipfile together. You needs only to pick the needed file from PUCKMAN and put it into PACMAN. This will works as well for PACMAN but not PUCKMAN. But effactively this two games are the same with only minor different.
Apply these rules for the games and I can guarantee you the get all of them runninng like charm, but some bigger size game can still crash you emulator. But this is due to the emulator problem not the romset.
Hope this help.

I understand what you mean, but I always target the parent rom and in the specific pacman case, I have the puckman rom aswell but still the thing doesn't work. I finally figured out tu run puckman and not pacman, that worked

Did you get your PACMAN.ZIP from
www.mame.dk ? If not then your're probably having a wrong set since
www.mame.dk is the official site for MAME. Every single new release is thru them and they have the most complete up to date sets. What you needs is to join them correctly.

Hi, I am new here, so if I this is a daft question then I apologies.
I have downloaded eMame (from
www.mame.dk).
I too have had trouble getting any game to work (none sofar)
I have downloaded pacman.zip & puckman.zip, extracted the contents, and zipped them up into a new zip.
But when I try and run eMame I am presented with a list of games of which none work. I am either told the roms are missing or unable to start audio emulation (for example this happens with pacman(midway))
What should I try next?
Thanks
K.

first of all disable audio, it's horrible for some games (I think it will blow your speaker due to the sharp loud noise) and might speed up a bit emulation
then get all pacman roms (4 or 5 I think). You can leave them seperate or use a romtool to join them into 1 zip (smaller, since it will eliminate duplicate romfiles)
you can also go to
www.vg-network.com for more info on the tools
or
http://www.mameworld.net/ for basically anything mame-related.
