Today is a really sad day. Today the US/UK showed the world the defience they have for international laws. The fact that US takes matters in their own hands and breach the international laws is very sad. How do you expect other countries to follow UN regulations when the US is flagarantly breaking them.

Today US defied UN and show the world that you don't have to care about international laws. The start of the war is like giving a message to the rest of the world "The US don't care about the UN or the majority of the UN security council, so why should the rest of the world follow international laws"

And the US is supposed to be a supporter of democracy. Nice kind of democracy, when you don't care about the majority of the UN security council.

Kofi Annan has stated several times that if US/UK goes to war without UN backing they are breaking international laws, which they clearly has done today. I surely hope that they will be punished like any other country who breaks international laws.

i dont agree

it was a sad day when the world decided it would allow saddam to continue treating his people with such horror.

watch how others jump on the band wagon

you honestly thing that vetoing things for the hell of it is helpful? (french, russia, germany)

we all know he wont respond to polite questioning and 18 resolutions later nothing has changed.

first him then south korea.

Then after this america need to look at their attitude regarding other nations.

@gadgetboytom: and when will the cowboys and the hooligans stop?
u're talking out of u're ass, dude... convince u'rself - this war has nothing to do with weapons of mass destruction... Saddam probably doesn't have any... but the funny part is if he did - the americans gave it to him, so that he could screw iran in the ass a few years ago...
the problem here is currency... i have the problem in my wallet... i'ts called EURO!
saddam DARED to index his oil price to EURO instead of dollar... that's why the french and the german don't like war and u britts do... u guys don't use it...
plus bush will NEVER mess with north korea... they can fry US territory with their cruise missiles!
4 NORTH KOREA, WE MUST TRY A DIPLOMATIC SOLUTION... ONLY BECAUSE WE CAN'T F*CK THEM OPENLY IN THE ASS, LIKE WE ARE DOING TO IRAQ, RIGH NOW!... Bush would say...

@ gadgetboytom

Well... I don't think that France and Russia were threatinning to use the veto just for fun. They had an opinion and is entitled to that. In fact this is exactly what the security council is all about.

BTW.. US is the country which has used its veto most of all the permanent security council members. The difference is that the other members respect opinions from the rest of the world unlike the US.

And the fact that not everyone agrees with the US opinions shows that the security council actually works. Until the US and the UK took matters in their own hands and destroyed all of that.

Also the fact that countries in the security council that the US tried to bribe with promises of financial help (and other things) still stand for their opinions shows how much they beleive in their opinion.

I do beleive that Saddam is a brutal dicatator, but that doesn't give US the right to decied to attack Iraq without UN backing. It's breaking the international laws no matter how much you don't like Saddam, and it gives a clear message to the rest of the world of how much respect for interantional laws the US/UK have (i.e no respect). And if the worlds most powerful country doesn't respect international laws and the UN charter why should the rest of the countries of the world respect them.

This will only lead to more terror threats against US. President Bush is by his arrogant attitude only increasing the hatred against US and in fact against the western civilization.

Yeah, that's what the US needs is to be punished after having 3500+ of their people murdered and two of the nation's largest structural icons leveled to the ground by Al Quaida terrorists that Saddam has ties with and has praised.

The US was terribly victimized physically, mentally, emotionally, and economically by these terrorists that Saddam was and is involved with. The US saw how they did this with only two airplanes. So are we supposed to sit around and negotiate with a crazy man (Saddam) for God knows how long until he has nuclear power, and doesn't just use it to take out a couple of buildings but maybe the entire east coast?

Saddam has had twelve years. We've been negotiating with Saddam for twelve years since the Gulf war in 1991. Why does the world think that another four months or a year is going to matter? Is there anything that Saddam has done to show that he is a reasonable man? He hates his own people! So why does anyone think that he would comprimise and work with the United States? If he hates his own people, how much do you think he hates us? All Saddam cares about is himself. And he has shown his hatred and contempt for the United States every chance he's had. He even tried to have President Bush, Sr. assassinated.

Iraq used to be one of the most prosperous nations in the middle east many years ago, just prior to Saddam's leadership. He has starved, tortured, and killed his own people, and turned Iraq into one of the most poverty stricken countries in the middle east through his squandering of his nation's wealth on his own material lusts and foolishness. Saddam has broken many international laws on many occasions over many, many years. Saddam cannot be negotiated with. He needs to removed from power and executed along with his sons.

Does the United States not have a right to do what it takes to make their country safe, or are we supposed to just sit around and be a doormat, waiting for Saddam to nuke us at some point in the name of democracy?

So many other countries are so selfish in their views, claiming we're selfish when all we're trying to do is prevent these terrorist freaks from escalating their efforts into something truly disasterous that would affect the whole world. Sweden (and every other country) weren't the targets here. We were. You didn't lose thousands of people in this case. We did. And just because other countries may deal with local terrorism perhaps more OFTEN than we do, doesn't mean we shouldn't do anything about defending ourselves. Put yourself in our shoes for awhile. How would you feel if you lost your family and friends to terrorists? How would you feel if your country was deeply wounded by what these freaks did. You'd be wanting war too.

Maybe the message the US/UK may be sending by their actions (if that is indeed the case) isn't as bad as you think. Maybe it's important. Maybe it sends a message that defending freedom and innocent lives is more important and should take precedent over, what may be at this point in time, some stupid laws. Sometimes rules have to be bent for the sake of INNOCENT human life. War is messy. If some innocent people over in Iraq are harmed, then blame that on Saddam. He and Al Quaida attacked first. And we are responding to that. The world easily forgets his responsibility in all of this. All he had to do is disarm certain weapons. He chose not to.

The US is not forcing themselves on anyone. The terrorists who deeply wounded us for a time forced THEMSELVES on someone - us, by killing innocent people and creating extreme damage and havoc. All we are doing is defending what is ours. Sweden (and any other country) would respond no differently if they were the target, and they thought military action would prevent further terrorist efforts that might end up blasting half their nation into pieces. When has Sweden or most other nations for that matter, recently in the last ten or fifteen years been in the world's limelight in terms of war? When have you ever been a target? Perhaps that is why it's difficult for many other nations to understand, because they haven't had to deal with this type of issue for so many years.

Dealing with Saddam and terrorists is much like dealing with someone who is drugged out of their mind but has a loaded gun in their hand with it pointed at you. They've damaged and killed others, and they've expressed many times how they'd like to kill you. What do you do? Stand their and negotiate until you get your head blown off? Perhaps he won't pull the trigger, but what if he does? Are you willing to bet your life on that? The US is dealing with much of the same thing with Saddam, but on a national scale. We can't wait to see what he'll do next, all in the name of democracy. Like I said before, he has ties to Al Quaida terrorists and praised what Osama Bin Laden did to our country. He's shown that he can't be reasoned with. The only thing that giving Saddam more time will do, is give him more opportunity to develop nuclear power, which he would use. This would be suicide to us to sit around and wait for that.

Focus your attentions on how Saddam has broken international laws. Not on how we are trying to defend and protect ourselves.
