I tried to start an app but got told the p800 had insufficient memory. As I can't close apps as I don't need them any more, I assumed that the OS would handle this problem. But it didn't.

I used the Task manager feature of handy day to close some other apps I had open, Opera etc, and then was able to start the app I wanted.

The questions are, am I right in expecting the OS to handle this issue and if so, whay isn't it and how do I fix it?

I think the P800 does not swap memory to disk like Windows. On the other hand, it is multitasking. So if you run many applications at the same time, the "work memory" can be full. The OS can not swap to disk, and must not close applications on your behalf. Therefore if you get a memory full situation, you need to close something manually. Most SE programs do not have an Exit menu item (I don't know why), most 3rd party programs have. System programs that allow you to close (almost) any running application are Handy Day, File Manager and Switcher.
