> P800 Repairs in US
Bookmark topic
I purchased a P800 on eBay in January from a reputable seller based in the Middle East. Since that time, I've checked Estato from time to time for troubleshooting and service information. A few weeks ago, I dropped my phone and broke the keypad flip. I've been back and forth many times with Sony Ericsson US customer service about getting the keypad replaced. According to the people at customer service, I could not get my P800 repaired because it had not been released yet in the US.
Until today, I was actually desperate enough to purchase a replacement from a Singapore-based SE repair center. The breakthrough came when I realized that I should be talking to the US Repair Center based in Minnesota. The folks there are knowledgeable, efficient and courteous, but they won't talk to customers without reference #s, which are issued by the much less knowledgeable and efficient folks at customer service. I used a simple trick to get a ref # and the hard to come by phone # for the Repair Center: I requested a firmware upgrade for the T68 that's been sitting in my closet since I received my P800. At the end of my conversation with the Repair Center rep about the T68 repair, I asked if they were repairing P800s yet and she said yes. I told her about the runaround with customer service and she apologized for their inaccurate information.
Now, to save other folks in the US with P800s from a similar experience, here's what to do:
1. Call SE customer service and insist they give you a reference #. If they say that the P800 is not supported, tell them you spoke to the Repair Center and politely tell them they are misinformed.
2. When you get through to a Repair Center rep, be prepared to pay $25 for processing and up to $150 for physical damage repairs. Try to get the work covered under warrantee, particularly if you bought it via official distribution channels, but be prepared to pay $25 for firmware updates and up to $175 for physical damage repairs. I guess that's the price of being an early adopter.
3. You'll get the phone back in 3-5 working days. in my experience, these folks are prompt and professional.
