Does anyone knows why SE doesn't let we upgrade our SE phones directly from theit site, just like Siemens do, with S55, for example?

I mean, with so many firmware versions available so far, why do they make all their costumers go bother the service point people, anda lose time and money?

They are afraide that some people will mess up the phones then claim it on the warrenty
also so that people don't modify the os

I don't think that being suspicious about their clients is the best way to get to sell more phones.

What about Siemens? Do they remove the phone warranty?

I don't think that's a real problem. I mean, what can be the problem about going to SE site, download an executable, connect your phone, an the run the firmware upgrade? The executable can verify itself, to see if it's not corrupted.

I had a Siemens SL-45 and there weren't any updates THROUGH SIEMENS.

That said, I did upgrade the phone once to make it a SL-45i (the Java version) by going through a German webstite and doing some funky stuff through their flasher app and a rogue Siemens file.

Still - don't think it was worth it. Traded one bunch of issues for another.

@ jtrascap

Go to http://www.my-siemens.com/MySiemens/CDA/Index/0,2730,PT_pt_0_page%253Ahome,FF.html (it's the portuguese version of the site), and on the right side of the page, click on Upgrade S55. That's what i mean about online firmware upgrade. That's waht i would like SE to do. And that's what i hoppe SE will do

i think is afraid that there server will crash, and when it crashes and your updating your phone, the update is uncomplete, and then you'll have to restart when the server comes back up. if the server would go online and somebody would post in on esato, it would crash, every body would update there phone, i've got about 5-6 phones that can use an update.

the server crashing is not an issue. I run a server for a company the size (maybe a bit larger) then SE, and we can handle upwards of 2000 hits a second.

PLUS, you are downloading a file to your client and then running a firmware flash utility to access the file and update your phone. You are not doing a live update from the web-server. That would not be efficient and you would have thousands of people with non-functioning phones, because their dial-up or something else got disconnected...

You're right, that's the way Siemens do it, anda that's the only logic way to do it. And i think it is safe.

That's exactly why i don't understand why SE and all phone manufacturers in general don't follow this kind of procedure.

The only reason i can imagine to justify that, except the "is getting done, wait a litle bit more" reason, is that they like their costumers so much that they want all of them in their Service Points
