Sony Ericsson unveils the Z700, a mobile gaming phone with color screen
Tuesday, March 5 2002
Sony Ericsson today unveiled the Z700 gaming phone. The phone combines a color screen, Java, Bluetooth, polyphonic ringtones and fast GPRS connection to form an ideal tool for playing games when mobile. The Z700 comes pre-loaded with Men in Black and Charlie’s Angels games, and will be on the market during Q3.
Mobile gaming is one of the most popular applications on a mobile telephone, in addition to voice conversation and text messaging. The rollout of GPRS networks, combined with such technology advancements such as color screens, provide richer and more compelling gaming experiences in the mobile environment. This is clear in the new Z700, which combines small size with a large color display.
The Z700 comes with two branded mobile games: Men in Black and Charlie’s Angels, both courtesy of Sony Pictures. Leveraging Sony’s strong competence and heritage in gaming as well as movies and music, allows Sony Ericsson to enhance the gaming experience and offer clearly differentiated products with a broad appeal to the gaming community. As Sony Ericsson has set out to become the leading player in mobile multimedia devices, market-leading support for gaming across the product portfolio is a key factor.
The Z700 is enabled by the Java 2 Micro Edition, licensed by Sun Microsystems. Java offers an open environment that allows third party applications to be downloaded into the mobile device over the air. Whilst this opens up possibilities in several applications areas, gaming is regarded as one of the services that will be enhanced by Java capability. For the consumer this means that they will be able to update their handsets regularly with new games or game content, such as the next level of a game.
For operators, gaming in the mobile environment will mean incremental traffic, for instance game downloads, high-score uploads, as well as online gaming. But there is also the possibility of content revenue, if well-known games are made available for download from operator portals.
The Z700 also has recordable polyphonic ring signals and sounds, as well as a web browser (HTML and WAP). The inbuilt Bluetooth wireless technology makes it possible to connect the phone wirelessly to cameras, headsets, PCs, or other Bluetooth peripherals. Using a Bluetooth headset is perhaps advisable if players want to keep their hands free for gaming. Sony Ericsson currently has four different Bluetooth headsets on the market.
