I cannot make sense of this as assigning different tones for different contacts seems to work for some and not others. Most of my contacts come through on the default tone although I have assigned different tones to those contacts. Can somebody explain why please? Have looked through the manual but haven't had any luck.

not sure why u have that problem...my personalised ring tones seem to work for my contacts...
try filtering your address book and check that the contacts u think are personalised are actually set that way
