Hey all.
Got my SE Mp3 player a few weeks ago and its great. the only thing is that the sound quality isn't that good. Correct me if I am wrong but I reckon that it is the (cheap) headphones supplied with it that give crappy sound quality, and not the actual mp3 unit.
The headphone plug seems to be of the smaller variety...and i was wondering if anyone had altered the headphone socket so that it could accept 'regular' size headphone plugs?? If anyone has done this...can you mabe give me a few instructions on how to do it myself?

You have to buy a headphone adaptor that goes from 2.5mm to 3.5mm. I dont know where you will find one but it is cheap.

The original socket is a smaller 2.5mm plug, all you have to do it find a store whch has good quality plugs, since I dont think SE wud be able to provide with anything better than wat comes with the mp3 player.
Or you can do like wat savvas said, get a 2.5mm to 3.5mm adaptor and use ur walkman/cdplayer earphones.

If you're willing to sacrifice the old plugs, just cut the wires where they are connected to the plugs. Then do the same with the pair of headphones you want instead and open them/attach your endings. I've been thinking of doing this myself but I don't have the guts.
This way you can still use the hands-free feature. Which is sort of the point with the mp3 accessory.

I bought one of those adaptors but they were not stereo, so I wasn't able to hear some of the sounds: for example, while listening to the ericsson mp3 which came in the player, I only heard the music which came through the left earphone on the stereo ericsson earphones. I think the ericsson ones are better

I had the same problem, If you see the adaptor part that goes in the mp3player you will see that it has only one plastic stripe(this means that only one headphone will work) but if you see the ericsson headphones you will see two stripes(both headphones work). So you must find a headphone adaptor that has two colour stripes.

I replaced the ear phones with proper headphones, just unclip the mic/button part and solder the wires from the headphones where the earphones are soldered to.
It works great and is louder and better quality, by leaving the mic part in you can still use it hands free, I just left the wires the right length so the mike is near your mouth.
The mic unit clips apart, no screws and the connections are easy to solder with a fine iron. You may need to open up the exit holes if the headphone leads are a bit thicker.
It all went well and I have used it for months with no problems.

Hey, if I recall, this unit sounded bad IF you do not have the headphone plug shoved in far enough. I have the same mp3 player, great sound with the included SE headphones, and I think I did have to give it a good push at first. You may not have to get new ones.

The main reason to change the ear-buds/headphones is to get more bass.
The main problem is losing the hands-free feature.
Here are stereo-plugs that would work (without hands-free):
