....the contracts are insanely expensive!
The only reason I would buy 3G would be for video calls but I just looked at the UK coverage and even buy the end of 2003 there will be HUUUUGE chunks of the UK without video coverage.
The UK coverage map: Click me then click the coverage "show me" button.

Regards,

Phil.

Prices do seem quite reasonable. We have video messaging in our area! But 50p a min isn't too bad considering.... the other call charges aren't too bad. 5p/min voice calls to other 3G users, 10p landlines and 25p other networks... just best to make sure all yer mates get one! I'm considering it...

Contracts ? In the UK - they are selling 3G phones for £199 with no contract, and the prices are entirely reasonable (5p per minue voice). Where are you getting your information from ?

The phones are not £199 sim free!! the t68i was £300+ sim free so a 3G phone is definitley not going to be cheaper!
edit: just checked and the prices are only if you also sign up to one of their 'price plans'.

I agree that normal calls are about the same but the cost of the phone and monthly costs/line rental added to the fact that video coverage is pretty poor means that it is a pretty shoddy deal.

Lets face it, a 3G phone wich isn't using its video capabilities is just a normal phone.

one of the things I'm interested in is what happens if loads of people sign up and start using the video services etc, with it affect the quality because surely they only have so much bandwidth to go round? I mean the adverts we've seen look good but when everyone starts to use it surely it will affect this

I'll buy 3g when all the other networks get on board. The problem with it at the moment is that as Three are the only people doing it, they can charge quite high prices.

I believe once all the other networks get in on the act the prices will go down and buying a 3g phone might actually be worth it.

Plus, of course, the fact I'm in love with the z1010

I agree that in the future once more providers are running it costs will drop but the lack of coverage is still a bit of a worry!

And I go back to my last point: if you aren't using video, what's the point? ("because i love the phone" is not a valid answer!)
