So is there any way to change the little thumbnail that shows up by your username as you post more to the phone you actually have? Or is it all random?

it's not random... you choose which thumbnail you want from here:
http://www.esato.com/board/faq.php#ranks
and then you select which one you have chosen and enter it here:
http://www.esato.com/board/prefs.php
unfortunately, you can't add your own unique thumbnail
