if you signed a contract with your service provider and the contract is up you can call them up and request an unlock code and they will give it to you, also if your contract is not up you can call them and ask to speak to a tech and try to talk him in to filling out a request form for the unlock code.

Obviously this works for some networks in some countries. Some coutries require networks to unlock phones after a certain period of time, by law. Some netowrks would never unlock the phones unless you pay an unlocking fee regardless of contract duration.

You're right. Not all networks do that. T-Mobile USA will unlock your phone for free even if you're still under contract with them. AT&T on the other hand NEVER unlocks their phones even if your contract has expired already. This message was posted from a T68i

silent:

you are right about at&t being b!tc#e$ about unlocking, i've asked them several times.
but i just unlocked my at&t t68i last week, for about 25 bucks total, after software/serial cable purchase, now i feel a deep, profound, emotion of "HA!" directed towards at&t

How did you unlock it? That will be helpful to know when my contract expires... Thanks for any help.

Price of a T28 service cable: 17$

Price of one unlock credit from gsmphonesource: 8$

Price of unlocking software: free

incredible satisfaction at thwarting at&t's monopolistic tendencies: priceless
