Hi all,

First time poster here. I've been doing a lot of reading on this board since I got my new T68i. How naive I was to think that connecting my IPAQ 3870 to surf the web would be easy.

I have read over 500 message board postings that relate to my specific problem but I still haven't gotten anywhere.

I have a few quick questions, that hopefully someone can answer.

1. Can I use my phone as a regular modem? So I can dial up my normal ISP and log in just as I would with my desktop computer through a land line? If yes, do I still need to get the GPRS data access plan or anything else?

2. If I wish to use GPRS to connect my IPAQ to the internet, what services from rogers would I need to subscribe to? Both Portage Plus and a Data Access Plan*? (*if yes...ouch)

3. From my limited understanding, wap is for browsing wap sites only, right? So I wouldn't be interested in setting up a WAP account? Sorry, but the difference between WAP and GPRS is still a little unclear for me.

If I can get that solved then I am half way there. All I'll need to worry about next is configuration!

Haha...this is going to be a long summer

Thanks guys,

Ron

1 You can use it as a modem. Simply subscribe a GSM data service from Rogers and make a dial up connection, but the access also depends the local ISP. 2 Subscribe GPRS. 3 Both Wap browsing and internet data access can be over GPRS connection. Once you get GPRS subscription, you may have both access but probably via different data account, depends on the operator. This message was posted from a WAP device

Hi omeggyman...

In response to your question... if you have a t68i on Rogers in Canada, you don't need Portage Plus, but you do need the data access plan, which starts at $20/month for 1.5mb... I think at $50/month for 10mb they have an offer for unlimited Mbs for the first 6 months.

Still very expensive though.

Regarding WAP, this is just an internet protocol used by phones for web browsing... GPRS is the actual data transmission service that is automatically when you activate your GSM phone on the Rogers network.

Hope this helps...

Hi guys,

You all have been awesome! I called Rogers and ordered the $20/1.5 Mb plan. My IPAQ will probably eat up 1.5Mb in a few minutes but I first want to test the waters out before I commit myself to some scary $50 plan.

I am having a little configuration problem which may have occured when I was trying to configure my phone before. When I try to connect my phone says "Wrong Password."

Strange, it never asked for a password either in the IPAQ or the phone.

If anyone knows what I should put in the user/pass section please tell me. The rogers customer support lady told me that I don't need any login IP's or APN#'s, but passwords never came up. So am assuming it has to do with my IPAQ...I look over my IPAQ again see if I can find a password config setting.

But so far so good...I am CONNECTED!

Thanks,

Ron

He's Back!

Hey guys,

My honeymoon with my IPAQ was short lived. Sure I was browsing the web in my car while driving on the highway. And ok…ok, that was me at work on msn messenger in the cafeteria.

But now I have a strange problem. My email outgoing doesn’t seem to want to work for domains outside of my own!?

My ISP is Sympatico. And I used my POP and SMTP settings that I use on my desktop to get my email off my compaq (3870). The only problem is that it seems to work flawlessly for sympatico emails. I can receive all my emails but I can only send out to sympatico emails. If I try another email with a different domain (ie. hotmail) it says, "Invalid message recipients: your message blah could not be delivered to the following invalid recipients.

Notes: This only happens if I email ppl without a @sympatico.ca at the end. Works fine if they do.

So if anyone knows what may be the problem please give me a shout...let this honeymoon last a little longer!!

Thanks,

Ron

Since you are using GPRS, your connection to the internet is by way of Rogers, so you have to use Rogers' own SMTP server.

You are now using Sympatico's SMTP but you are not dialed to Sympatico directly, so they will only allow email for their domain. This is to avoid SPAMMING.
