Hi guys,

I tried to clean my jogdial today. Bad mistake, the forward/back action completely stopped working!

I started looking into the situation and FIGURED IT OUT!!!

There are two pins in the front of the jogdial on the opposite side of the LCD. One pin (the left one) handles push action. The second pin (the right one) handles pull action.

The left pin has to be free of the jogdial (float above it), so that when you push the jogdial towards it, it gets pressed.

The right pin lodges on the inside of the jogdial, and when you pull, it gets pulled and causes a contact (or release).

These are very delicate connections, but using a small screwdriver (like the one that watchmakers use) I was able to move both pins into their correct places.

The jogdial works 100% again!!!

the jogdials do seem a bit flaky.. sometimes when I go to pull mine forward it feels stuck - not enough to actually be a problem but enough to make me remember it whenever I use it for anything.

Thanks for the info... you never know within about 6 months we all might be having to do it...

It feels stuck because it most likely is.

Removing the lint from inside the jogdial (it's extremely exposed!) and putting the tiny latches in their correct positions made my jogdial work better than it had when I bought it!

I'm pushing and pulling the jogdial now, like there's no tomorrow...

My Jog Dial is acting up now!! It seems biased towards the 'push toward' direction.

@oferlaor - Your solution sounds great but when you say left and right I'm not sure what thats relative to. Is that with the screen facing you or away from you. Could you post a more detailed account of what you did as I can't clearly see what you mean by 'float above it'. Did you open the case of your p800 etc.

Any help would be great.

Hi,

Sorry I wasn't clear enough. Let me try again:
1. I fixed it without opening the case. Complete fix was done with the case closed as you normally use the phone.

2. hold the jog dial towards you, with the camera pointing up and the LCD pointing down. The top of the jogdial (being the side closest to the camera) you will be able to see two slightly bright metal "pins" on the inside of the phone.

The one on the right shines more because you can see more of it - this is the one responsible for the pull action (pull towards the LCD). Fiddling around with it (very carefully as not to loosen it upmake sure it's in position - it is supposed to latch on the inside of the jogdial's plastic wheel, so that when you pull the wheel you are actually pulling this metal "pin".

the other pin is for pushing (towards the camera). It is less visible and is on the left side. The principle behind it is simpler. It floats "above" the jogdial. When the jogdial gets pushed, it squashes the pin and triggers the button.

The trick to getting these working is to make sure that the pins are in their correct positions (the push one can slightly bend and gets stuck in the back of the jogdial's plastic ring). Make sure there's no lint or dirt stuck there, as these will make it difficult to push (or pull) and can also stop one or the other from operating properly.

Good luck!

From what I can see, the problem is not a manufacturing fault, it's just a very delicate mechanism.

It assumes a very clean environment (Which my pant pocket doesn't always qualify as being...).

I think it could have probably been designed somewhat smarter...

Not that I use the forward/back functionality that often, but it's still a nifty feature...

Can't wait for games that start utilizing it properly.
