> T610 - My deeper review
Bookmark topic
Hi all,
After I posting many negative comments about the T610 before, here I would like to say deeper comments about it.
1. The phone looks really good. It (sliver) matchs all the suits and looks very classy.
2. The polyphonic ringing tone is not so loud and cannot be heard in my pocket in noisy enviornment. Louder a little is better but I still think now is enough already. If any louder may lead to worse quality earphone, I prefer the current volume.
3. Hissing sound is annoying in quiet environment. However, on the street, I cannot hear it at all. Also, I could not find this problem when I was buying it, so I bought it......
4. Bluetooth's FTP is really nice! I like drag and drop and connect without wire. It is really free! But I hope I can drag and drop more folders (e.g. Java and Mophun) in order to let me to backup them. It will be excellent if users can also drag and drop via IR (with using some softwares).
5. It is sad that there is no way to backup Java MIDLets and Mophun...... I hope someone can make a programme for us to do so.
6. I think Sony Ericsson has done worse job on PC software. Nokia and Siemens provide very good PC Suite and let them to backup all settings. 3rd party's MobilMB can let users to drag and drop Javas also.
7. Now I think the menu speed is quite slow, especially when using Deep Ocean and other themes other than Classical. Scrolling in SMS is very slow.
8. Java's cabability is quite bad. Most Nokia's Javas are not supported. Also, even the T610 supports, most programmes run very slowly. You can try StrangeMaze or a very simple game Pacman, they run very very slowly in the T610 which is really unacceptable.
9. Startup speed and phonebook loading speed is super fast! The phone can load the phonebook and call list very soon after switching on the phone, which will take around (maybe more than) a minute in T68i!
7+8+9: Very strange. Point 9 proves that the phone uses a fast processor, but why scrolling is still so slow? Maybe the new Themes format (v2.0) uses so much nice graphic. Yet, why Java runs super slowly? I hope Sony Ericsson can find a solution to the Java cabability as soon as possible, and let the T610 supports most Nokia Series 40, T720 and GX10's J2ME programmes.
10: I don't know why we need two speed keys to access the WAP. I prefer a user-definable shortcuts for right-side-key and moving up joystick. The WAP key (right-side-key) is useless when talking, why not use the button as a voice recorder activater when dialling? What a waste.
Overall: This phone is really nice, but I don't know why, I still not like it very much (at least not as like as to my T39). It seems has lost so much Ericsson's "feeling", but more like a Nokia instead. It is quite sad. But it is still a good job by Sony Ericsson. If the Java cabability and hissing sound problem can be fixed, it will be very very nice and very popular!!! (I think most people may be scared away when they know that their favourite Nokia, Motorola, Sharp, Siemens Java games are not supported by T610......)

Hi djk, thanks for your review!
Nice to hear that phonebook loading is fast, that's good.
I read on mobile-review.com that the menu is much faster if soundeffects are turned off, have you tried that?

Hi Jonne,
I switched off the sound but no effect to the menu speed.
Anyway I prefer switching off the key sound, as the key sound is very very small in volume and it sounds not consistent with the menu speed.
I have written some reviews before also, you can try to read them.
This one is just some updates and want to share my impression to the T610 after a few days using.

@djk
Java the language is a universal standard, but each phone company adds their own phone specific API to the language, so don't expect Java programs to be compatible. (This is true to computer languages too!)
Are you using the same SIM in your T610 as your previous phone? Speed of the phonebook is often SIM dependent, but SE phones have always been very fast at initial reading of the SIM, and Siemens is slowest.

yeah if you have a look at this site:
http://www.abstractworlds.com/strangemaze/index.php?id=bench
se is on the lowest FPS. this means that there probably is a bug in the software because i'm sure the processor wouldnt be that slow
EDIT: actually could you test this benckmark on your phone and tell us the results?

yeah I agree there definently must be a bug in the way J2ME is implemented on the T610, no way the real speed could be that low!! The T610 emulator that comes with the Java SDK gives a result of 100 FPS running the StrangeMaze JAD file, obviously the emulator does suppose to emulate the speed of the phone running these codes, so what gives!?!

the emulator working on a computer will be much faster than the actual phone. i think the emulator would be for checking compatibility, not speed.

maybe true as I am running the emulator on a 2ghz Athlon... but this should not make a difference, the emulation does slow down if you set the StrangeMaze graphics to higher detail... the speed should not be affected if the emulator was running at full throttle on a 2ghz Athlon. Plus the emulator runs some java code that doesn't run on the actual phone it should be emulating. Now one could say that the emulator is doing what it not suppose to do, but its more likely that the phone is not doing what it suppose to do. The Mophun SDK emulator for the T610 does emulate the speed accurately according to the mophun development team, it just does not run the digitally signed games and the phone will not run any the stuff that ain't been certified. Sooo to sum it up... me thinks the java on the T610 is buggy

I still think the problem is in not optimized J2ME aplications. I think that when programmers will optimize it for T610 everything will be OK. I know that in telephones before some J2ME apps missed at least sound if they were moved to other phones from dedicated. I think time will show...
