I'd value your input on this dilema...
I'm now using a P800, having swapped handsets with a friend who's also on Orange - she has my T68i and I have the big ol' P800 (which I paid for as an upgrade for her).
Do we need to let Orange know that we're using different handsets?
Will they hate us for it and void lots of things / try and charge us?
What problems could there be with not letting them know?

I guess she will get charged for the calls and stuff that you make on the p800. An Orange contract is non transferable so you cant just swap your names on it. If you don't tell them she will continue to get billed and you can pay her the money each month.
If you do tell them then most likely they will cut you off?????

If your "friend" is a live-in friend then that this could simplify things. Also, when you say you swapped, I assume you kept your own sim cards? If so, then she should not get charged for your calls as her own sim is in your old phone, which she now uses. Things to consider, perhaps you need to look at the terms of the upgrade. Was she on an old orange tarrif with inclusive insurance? Did the included care insurance get extended with the upgrade? If so, if something happens to the P800 while with you, you would not "technically" be able to make a claim. Insurance aside you could find yourself wih other problems. For example, if you reported your phone stolen, Orange would have the wong IMEI listed for you and could possibly block your friends (your old) phone as they are unaware of the exchange. The only thing I could suggest is that you both instruct Orange that each other is the registered "user" of the respective phone. This may help with some potential issues but I don't think it's ideal.

It doesnt really cause any problems except when you phone Orange for technical support, because then they bitch about the fact that you are not using the sim which came with the phone, but they havent cut me off or anything like that.
I think the main problem is with Orange care. It really does cause problems with this, because Orange care is assigned to your mobile number, not your phone (i.e. if I had taken care on my SPV sim card, they would assume I had an SPV when it came to make a claim).
My advice, therefore, is to take out third party insurance through another company, it causes less problems in my opinion.

I guess if you are out of contract then it is okay, because you can do what you like with the phone then. But if you are still in contract then the phone and sim is your responsibility unless you report it stolen.

I upgraded to the T68i as a normal upgrade, after the expiry of my previous contract at the beginning of the year. My friend’s contract was up for renewal recently, so we used that opportunity to upgrade to the P800 – and then just swapped the sims – are there any problems with doing this?
Neither of us have any extra insurance with Orange.

when you report a phone lost or stolen the will bar the iemi number relating to the contract, ie you lose your phone and sim, your friend phone will get its iemi number barred!
also should there be a problem with the p800, you will have to get your friend to call and log the error and vise-versa
it is something i do all the time mostly with my sister, as she like to play with my hand sets..
i also buy a lot of sim free handset and use them, but all the time you must remember what handset does belong to the contract, and when talking to orange about something you MUST tell them that is the handset you have.. as they will not speek to you any further if it not YOUR phone!

I'm just wondering because the GPRS bars in the corner are never there - something I solved with the T68i by phoning up and getting a sim update... I can get this from the SE website, though right?

once you have a hand set with orange the only way to get the to acnoledge you have another is to upgrade.
you you have had you current phone for over a year then upgrade..
you can still upgrade if you have had you current phone less than a year, but you will have to pay extra

Get both phones insured through orange care and you can still make a claim if you lose either phone. It's 2 claims actually - one for the sim card that gets lost, and one for the handset.
It's not that complicated, but don't give them too much information or (like this thread) people find problems where there really aren't any.
