> Talk rates on GSM after 3G

Talking rates over the "old" GSM network can't be held up after 3G has been fully deployed in Europe can it?
As it is today it would actually be much cheaper for me to buy a 3g phone use it for six months and then be very happy about all the money I have saved. Because 3 here in Sweden have a superb deal where you get 7 houers of talk time included in the monthly charge.
But that made me think...if 3 can do that what will all the GSM operators do to trye and keept their costumers? To keep their customers they must lover the talking charges per minute a greta deal to keep upt with the offer that 3 has started with.
What's happened with the GSM rates in Italy for example where i understand that 3 has gotten a flying start? Have the GSM operators made any countermessures?

i believe voice sms etc is still over gsm its only the video stuff that goes over 3 network.
3 have subsidised voice charges to encourage people across.
i believe in the uk all 4 major mobile networks have 3g licenses so will use both together when ever they chose to launch

Gothenburg, Stockholm, Malmö and Karlskrona, Falun..... not that many. That means if you go out side the net, it will cost you more, and if you call other outside 3 it will cost you more. So the monthly price is good, but it could be really expensiv because 3 isn't that big in sweden so far.

Well in the UK at least the 3G network does carry everything - voice, sms, mms, video but outside the 3G network the handsets roam onto the o2 GSM network for voice and SMS (and GPRS for MMS if the handset supports it). Most of the voice call charges are identical whether you are on 3's UMTS network or roaming on o2's GSM network but calls to landlines are 5p/min more expensive when on GSM but only if you are on the PAYG price plan.
The tariffs on 3 are very good if you are already a heavy user. For £60/month you get 1000 voice mins and a massive bundle of other inclusive stuff. The GSM tariffs that are ~£60/month have nowhere near as much inclusive stuff so on the face of it people would be much better off on 3 (if they are already heavy users).
However 3 (in the UK at least) has had a lot of teething problems and so UMTS is by no means a thoroughly reliable alternative to GSM at the moment. Until that is the case I don't think that many GSM users will be switching over to 3 - even if the tariffs may seem more attractive. And of course the technical difficulties are also compounded by the relatively poor battery life of the current 3G handsets.
Also 3 in the UK don't have any mid-use tariffs at the moment so it is either £60/month or PAYG (or £100/month for double the £60 bundle) so many people don't see switching to 3 as a viable alternative at the moment.
